Captive nuts!!
#1
Anyone had experience with these?
Was removing the plastic chain guard when one bolt just turned in the thread (the hardest one (front) to get to of course).
Finally ended up grinding off the head to remove the guard and that revealed that the captive nut inserted into the swing arm wasn't any more. Captive that is.
They are a bit like a big pop rivet system. Now I'm left with the nut rotating, and the stub of the bolt still firmly siezed in it's thread!
Any suggestions (other than the obvious!)?

Ian,
Belt it through into the swingarm and leave it to rattle around then go to any mechanic and ask him to put in a nutsert. Bruce

I'd try to grab it & pull it out not punch it in as it has a flared lip to hold it up a little off the arm

Well, I managed to extract the remains of the bolt, so that leaves the captive nut loose in the arm.
I thought I'd be able to tighten it up by using a bolt a bit to squash the top flange tighter, but can't get enough torque on the bolt as ..... the nut turns. There's just nothing to hold. So I thought I'd try Loctite 600 or something tonight with maybe a bit of a belt with a chisel or something to distort the hole out of round.
After that, I think it's a destruct job, but I'm relauctant to drop it into the arm. Might have to though.

Because these mushroom out from underneath the same as a rivet when fitted Bear, I doub't you will get it out as it is without making the hole bigger. The only way I could see would be to drill a hole in it and then get a small die grinder and actually cut it thru to one side so that you can squeeze, as in collapse it and then withdraw it from the hole. The other option may be to pean around the edge of it with a sharp centre punch so as to tighten it enough to be able to turn and get the bolt piece out and then with the fitting tool designed to fit these, retighten the insert in the hole.
Cheers

Thanks for that, so far I've locktited the nut and it seems to be OK. I've got the bolt out, so if I could the right tool I could now re-tighten it. But where would you get such a tool?

Exhaust shops as they have them to fit "upstream kits" to measure and sample exhaust gas before the cat convertor. I have one here, come over Bear
Or get a collar \ spacer slightly bigger than the bolt and a longer bolt than standard, screw it into the thread and tighten against collar and it will expand the lower portion as it pulls against it and lock it in, works basically the same as a pop rivet .................use high tensile bolt and don't over do it
