I went to Ron Ball's today and he said that replacing the stock cam chain tensioner on our busas is a must. It elliminates cam chain rattle altogether and is more importantly reliable.
Will the stock (recalled) ones do fine? and
How many people here have actually put in a manual cam chain tensioner? <i></i>
This has been rolled around alot on SH. ORG by some dudes who know stuff.
The site owner is strongly against them, and says the recall job does the job better with less risk and less monitoring. Me? I dunno, so I go along with the majority view on this one. <i></i>
And glad I did.
My 02 has had a noisey chain since day one. (More like day two the way I run them in )
Had the manual fitted soon after that. (Petespitstop)
No complaints. Once it's adjusted right, mine has stayed right. None of the waiting for it to go up a notch on the oil tensioner for this little black duck.
If Ron is recommending it, trust him. He knows the Busa.
He's spent many an hour fiddling with mine.
This topic is yet another can of worms. (As you'll see)

Well there were five different ones I believe........ (unofficially of course) some with one dot ........some with three, some oil pressure assisted ? some that came with a modified chain guide also (that some naughty fellows didn't fit) Which one do you have ?
There have been failures, they can also some times be noisy until the tensioner takes up the next notch. The usual fix (read butcher) was apparently to loosen of the tensioner body allow the adjuster to click up one notch and retighten body ...........result = over tensioned cam chain causing excessive wear on chain guides, stretched chain or failure etc
Manual good or bad they cannot fail So as long as they are set correctly as Giddy allready said
I have had one fitted for about 6 years now and it's still working
Plus can give up to 2 Hp by reducing excessive friction
This is not to say that they will fail of have a problem any longer, but if you can eliminate the chance of a prob, then why not
It's a bit like the "case saver" on the early models for the crankcases that stops damage when the starter kicks back It may never happen, but a 2.5 k repair is even sadder if it could have been prevented

now so far it appears that the stock recalled cct hasn't caused any problems apart from being noisey.
If anyone has any other experiences other than the cold start rattle, please let us all know. <i></i>
