Would there be any disadvantage to running a log type exhaust manifold compared to the swept in type.
Turbo headers Swept in or Log type

Ant,
Are you putting a turbo on for looks and bragging factor or are you chasing the best hp possible for your combo.? Leonard. ![]()

Log will make less power and be more prone to heat expansion probs.
Worth the time to make the classic v shape, You using mild steel or stainless ? for what your doing mild steel would be easier, off the shelf 1.6 mm mandrell bends non aluminiumised will oxy weld easily and if coated last a long time .

Bragging and looks NO so I'm guessing the log is not the way to go.
Best HP for a stage 1 type set up. Need more HP to get the et's down. Standard swept type it is then. I'll be using stainless 316 mandrel bends.

I've seen some horrendous-looking designs that worked (dunno how long they lasted) but could not possibly have been efficient. Vee-design is better than log but log is much easier to make and will be easy to get the turbo high for good oil draining. I don't actually think there's so much in it as folk seem to think but if you're looking for the best efficiency you can't really beat the shortest, straightest path. If you end-up making a log then at least make sure the turn-into the turbine has deflectors to stop the exhaust pules from No1 firing up the No4 tube and vice-versa. Certainly I could make a log-type manifold in a day, but not a vee. The last one I made took a couple of days of cutting and measuring.
When you weld it make sure you purge the tubes with argon or it will coke-up on the inside with stainless. You don't want bits of that coming off and destroying your turbine wheel.

Has someone got photo's to show the difference between a log and other type of manifold?
