Vic $50 levy for Motorcyclists

Motorcycle Levy a “greedy grab for money”

Motorcycle Riders Association of Australia President (MRAA) Mr Dale Maggs today forthrightly condemned the extension of the Victorian Governments so-called “safety” levy on motorcycle registrations.

Mr. Maggs stated that this levy was originally imposed with very little consultation and has been cynically extended with even less. The main advisory body on motorcycle issues – the Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Council (VMAC) - has overwhelmingly supported the abolition of this levy. Rather than listen to this rider and industry body, the Government has decided to continue a levy that was blatantly unfair from the start, purely on the acquiescence of a single VMAC member.

Riders are being forced to pay for the engineering incompetence and poor design of Victorian roads in order to eliminate motorcycle black-spots which should never have existed in the first place. While fuel prices rise and traffic congestion continues to increase, the Bracks Government actively discourages a convenient and efficient form of personal mobility. Despite the continued efforts of an anti-motorcycle lobby within VicRoads and other organisations, motorcycle and scooter registrations have increased significantly as Australians have realised that they are an economical and enjoyable form of transport that is extremely well suited to the Australian climate and lifestyle.

The hypocrisy of a government that spends millions of dollars on freeways to alleviate congestion on one hand but on the other hand actively works against transport that can conveniently and comfortably help prevent the same congestion actually beggars belief. This levy punishes those who are being ecologically responsible. The MRAA sees this levy as an undisguised attempt to cash in on rising fuel prices at the expense of those who can often least afford it.

If the levy has had such successful results, then the MRAA calls on the Minister to explain why the levy should not be extended to all vehicles – including cars, bicycles and the trucking industry. If the Government cannot justify this then it shows the levy extension for what it is – an appallingly cynical greedy grab for money.

The MRAA believes that the Government has shown that negotiation is no longer possible and expects that riders throughout the state will support the proposed direct action that is already being planned for the resumption of Parliament.

It sounds like your going to be pushing shit uphill if you think they will remove a levy that will raise more cash from the increasing population of Motorcycles.
With the cost of fuel making bikes more attractive, you can only expect this virus of money grabbing to spread to other states as well as VIC.

I wish you luck with your endeavours.
