rectifier converts the 70 odd ac volts down to ~14 dc volts , i would start with a new rectifier if its not controlling the voltage ,
the ebay mosfet type are much better than the original

Hey guys....I think mungaman is talking about his '99 copper/silver here!?!

I had a similar prob with my '99 just recently, Gary! And as mentioned above, I replaced the rectifier/regulator with a [fairly cheap] aftermarket brand off eBay, and it hasn't missed a single beat since!! But, before I eventually replaced it, the old one did severely damage the battery to the point where I needed to replace that with a new one as well!!

Hope ya get it all sorted in time, would love to see the old girl down there....
