Fantastic pics. Wish I had a better camera when I went there years ago. What a magical place eh. Black beaches, bubbling sulfur pits, volcanoes, great people, gorgeous chicks, awesome ski-do riding on glaciers. Thanx again for the pics, it's brought it all flooding back.

It was even nice when I was bogged to axles on an interior road & out of ph range. Got pretty scary for a while as it was bloody freezing, (literally). Needless to say the Icelandic copper that came & got us, (after 3hrs of driving treacherous roads in his Patrol) was cursing "crazy Aussies" & couldn't believe we got to where we did.
Once I got on this road that was supposed to clear up "soon" we couldn't turn around in our Dodge Ram 4wd camper. The road just kept getting worse & there became a 1m drop-off either side into marshland. The road itself was one car width wide. 1 1/2 hrs driving in low low from lock to lock to keep it going straight. Finally it dropped onto it's axles. So my girl & I crawled into the back, poured ourselves a Vodka or 3 & listened to the magnificent silence & the Snow Geese. In the morning all we could do was take all of our food, water & hope we'd get reception or help before nightfall. I reckon only 1/2 doz cars used this road a year. Had to walk for 9hrs & just got through when I was standing on the top of the only hill for miles. Still the road was officially open, (only 3 days before) so the copper couldn't say too much, (in English anyway). I'd still love to know what he was saying when he picked us up & kept driving to tow us out. He didn't want to keep going any further himself but he couldn't turn around either. His mega jacked up Patrol made fairly light work of it compare to our Ram with a camper on the back but still he had to use his winch to turn around. I'll never forget the groaning sounds coming from the Ram when he was winching it out of it's hole & turning it around. I encouraged him to keep persisting & kept helping him with what little traction I could get. Eventually we got it out. Imagine going back to the place we hired it from & telling some lovely Icelandic bloke that his camper is sunk to the axles in the interior somewhere & we won't be able to get it out for another month until it dries up. That was probably my biggest fear. Eventually we got it out..., phew. Anyhow, sorry to hi-jack your amazing pics post with my shitty story.

If anyone's ever thinking of going there, just stop thinking & do it, you'll never forget it. Just hire a 4wd camper & go just at the start or at the end of their season, & be wary of interior roads & cheap maps.

I'm off to see if I can find those pics....

Yeah, Cam, all in all, fantastic place. We didn't go to the interior - we had enough trouble doing everything we wanted that was on or near the ring road! Only had 2 and a half weeks.

You say start or end of summer, but even in the height of high season, hardly saw a soul once we were out of Reykjavik...

Glad you enjoyed the pics.

Glad to hear another happy user of the canon, especially with the kit lenses.

I love my 400D and the stock twin lens kit! They've taken some great shots on your trip.

I have brought a 10-22 lens - which is has its own amazing use & I have been very happy with. And have a 50mm as well. It's enough to keep me pretty happy with the set up and try not to let my partner run off with it. I keep hinting he should purchase another body so we'll both be happy.

I have a Sony 12mp which is a handy pocket camera. I still love lugging around the camera bag though.
