Turbo Legality?
#1
This is proberly aimed more at the QLD turbo blokes. (Please correct me if im wrong at anytime) Im of the understanding that no turbo Busas in QLD have mod plates re: Turbo installation. Im thinking that maybe someone has tried to obtain a mod plate but im not sure. Surely its not as simple as taking you bike to a RWC station and getting it checked out and mod plate attached? Is there actually a code for a turbo modded bike? If someone has tried to get a mod plate for legal/insurance purposes why were they knocked back? Mine is getting blown in the next few weeks and i contacted my insurance company (as well as a couple of others) and asked about mods, they all said if the mod doesnt cause the bike to be unroadworthy they will still cover it. Hence the reason for the mod plate. Any input or corrections would be greatly appreciated

PS.... im still going to turbo it no matter what the response here, but having insurance with the turbo would be peace of mind.

Oh yeah i dont give a rats arse about being legal as far as getting pinged by the cops, ill chance that. But if the worst happens i dont really want a claim knocked back because of the turbo. So if i can keep both happy ill sleep well.

Apparently in Queensland you need a turbo or a big block to break 10 seconds.Ghastly And how many runs do you guys get each meet?If we get 5 its a good night. In the dead of winter on an ice ring we might get 10 once or twice a year.I really can,t see the point of a turbo streetbike. The road laws are becoming so draconian now, they,d throw you in with the murderers for one twist of the wrist.Imagine the headlines 350km/hr streetbike race on our streets. All bullshit but good for a headline.Keep them stealth boys.

you can get a turbo bike in QLD legal.... a good mate of mine got his 929rr mod'ed and legal.. he runs over210hp and had no real prob..

it just takes a long time with the respective departments that you have to deal with... i couldn't see it being any different from a cbr to a busa?

He added a better braking system and a coupleof other things to show that the bikes brake system was improved due to the more hp.

Theonly real problem he had was the db from the bike... he stuffed his cans full of exhaust packing to get it under the legal requirement.. it sounded and idled like shit, but it didn't matter, it wasn't ridden... only free reved.

if you want more info i'll see if i can pass his number on... he's a busy bloke.

Correct me if I'm wrong lads. I looked into this years ago when I lived in Townsville. Basically, they didn't care what you did as long as it had a proper exhaust system, a working light system and a couple of other normal things. They don't seem to care less that Harleys have straight pipes.

not anymore mate, Brett (turbo 929rr Rapid mag Nov or Oct 07) moved from W.A to Townsville and got pinned straight away ... hense he had to go through all the bullshit to legalise his turbo system...

The turbo itself isn't illegal.. theres no law in QLD that says you can't have one on there, theres a law that states that you can not have more than 'x'% of hp more than stock, from what i've been told..

Then theres the db issue.... Undecided

So if i fit a turbo system with absolutley no increase in power (only for bullshit factor because im a scared nancy boy) i shouldnt need an ennginering cert just a mod plate from my friendly RWC guy. If i run the bike at 1psi and use a standard muffler i shouldnt have a problem getting a mod plate? I know that sounds like a stupid thing to say but, in theory it should work. Because the turbo mod is approved?

well... do you even need a mod plate? Brett carries around photocopies of his documentation for his turbo.

from memory, he didn't have a mod plate... i could be wrong but.

When I approached them they said there are no Laws in place to say it cant and they will look at each application on its merit. I didnt do it as I didnt want my name on record for thinking about. Could give it a go now that I took it of to see what they say.

Tell them you want it for more towing power like you use to, LOL

the laws have recently changed. if you had a turbo bike before the july past, you could have got it done via going thru the appropriate testing. you needed a dyno sheet to prove the hp wasnt more than a certain % over stock. you had to upgrade brakes, then do stop tests to prove they were better, or of course find someone that would just say they were and sign off.

i am applying anyway soon with my mates non turbo bike numbers. i will let you know how i get on and if they knock me back, what reasons they give me.
