Well she hates pillioning on the Busa and now she's gone and done something about it. Mrs Monyx passed her pre-learners training, next stop LAMS approved bike.
Been educating myself on a segment of the market I know v. little about - shortlist down to Virago 250 and older Kwaka EL250 (gpx mtr) as my input was 'get a twin otherwise struggle to reach 100 km/h on the parkways in Canberra.'
Think found something reasonable in Syd so headn there Sat.
I don't wanna ride back on the little bugger...do they hire bike trailers generally?? That will be the go I think or jam it onto a 6x4 box tralier I guess. Mark

A mans gott'a have his dignity, thats why we only ride Busa's. But when it comes to pleasing the better half, all that goes out the window. Don't be a wuss, ride it back, you'll appreciate the Busa even more after that.
Congrats to the better half.
The bigger hire mobs do a one hire, but it will have to be one that you guys have down there also. Eg kenards you know the big ones.
Cheers Dee
Actually TBO I had a ball on a viragao 250 , 'lil twin making all the right noises thru a set of after-market straight thru pipes...but not exactly flying past the tin-tops.
Not the best bike for Canb with all our round-abouts here... whip around a smallish circle...and what the?! my boot and peg grinding away on the asphalt
Told the missus upon returning...she starts tell'n me not to think it's a busa...I said I wasn't even trying to go quick

ride it you big pansy a virago 250 has enough poke to get a 140kg bloke to 130 with out to much hassle. i used to have one and it was a good little bike. good to learn on. Proud owner of MM Racing!
Hi mate,
If your looking for a LAMS bike how about the GS500. Great little paralell twin with some cubes to boot. Great starting bike. Light, stears well and good for all of the Canberra round abouts (I lived in Canberra for 16 years ).
Give it a look if nothing else. Seems a shame to ride/spend your money on something as small as a 250 when there are other options out there and for about the same money! They are also quite a few of them around so finding one shouldn't be hard. Usually ridden by learners or comuters. A friend of mine had one as a learner and she kept it for ages. Certainly alot longer than she would have kept a 250.
Oh, and a 500 will give her the ability to have a little fun up the Clyde when she gets to that stage.... 250 is too small imho.
Good luck with the purchase and congrats to the better half! Cheers,
Holge

Quote:Oh, and a 500 will give her the ability to have a little fun up the Clyde when she gets to that stage.... 250 is too small imho.
She is vertically challenged...so a low, low seat is a must hence the cruiser-esque bikes. GS500, VTR250, even GPX250 out.
Problem is not really worth registering mid-size in ACT cost $455 for anything over 300cc vs $177 for 250.
Since this will be the 4th vehicle registered between 2 of us cost is a factor...so brings us back to 250s, pity..I 535 Virago would be perfect. Mark

Good on Mrs Monyx!
My wife's onto her fourth road bike now and it's nice to know that If the 'busa is last out of the shed then the wife's new pride and joy will hold its own when I use it instead.
It won't be long till she gets something that can keep up with the big kids.
Regards, teamslak
Congrats to all the partners who take up riding.
My wife gave it a go a couple of years ago and bombed out during the 2 day learning phase
At least she tried, and in a way, I'm glad that she didn't progress. I reckon she suffers from tunnel vision on the road and doesn't have the peripheral vision required for safe riding.
She has an exceptional driving record in cars and I feel quite safe with her at the wheel. BUT on a bike, you have to be really aware of every hazard out there.
Please give Mrs Monyx all the support she needs during the next few months and encourage her to go out alone some times to gain confidence.

"TAKE MY ADVICE"
I'm not using it anyway!
Well, thinking the Kwaka EL250 Eliminator was a reasonable buy, we arranged a bike trailer, tie downs and rope and finally left Canb around 12:30 (planned 8:30 depart but I had some work to finish in the AM)
Empty bike-trailer bouncing along...approaching Goulburn hear a loud bang and look up I can't see the ramp on the trailer anymore....evidently latches are POS and bolt in the (1) shackle went south so dragging its ass along the Federal Hwy. Latch it back, shortened the chain on my tow-bar lucky I had spare D-Shackle to secure it, but not happy with just one safety chain, so detour into Goulburn for a padlock, cursing dodgey rental place trailers costing $8.95 on top of my $46 hire fee.
Coming back Syd-> Canb downpour around Goulburn on eve 23/12 just incredible, fog, low visibility = try 5 hrs getting home from Nth Sydney partly keeping speed around 80-90kms thinking bike might move, rest bad weather.
Gave it a new oil & filter, check radiator level, tyres pressures, also plan change fork oil and up the viscosity a bit...so soft in the front end. Pull it out yesterday after we come back from Xmas @ coast, choke to start like normal and no go, fumey smell so I guess I flooded it, off choke full throttle...been 48 hrs still can;t start the bugger even after batt charge. Guess it off with the side covers, pillion seat, real seat, then tank so I can finally give the sparkies a look.

Congratulations Mrs Monyx
hey monxy
I've taught a lot of women to ride. If shhe wants to come out with me at any time, I'm more than happy to take her out.
Thanks Heidi I'll let Miffany know...bear in mind EL250's 4th gear is about geared the same Bus' 1st!
In fact she has met with 'Girls on the Move' and will join their club for the L rides and I believe a ride to Burrunjuck Dam is planned for 28/1.
So far the bike broke down only once:
She: "It just stopped! I don't know what's wrong...damn bike!"
Me: "what did you do?
She: "Nothing! Just rode it down from my friend's place and it stopped around the corner"
Me: "hmm, did you run out of fuel?"
She: "never mind"
Me: "you forgot turn to the fuel tap on didn't you"
She: "Shaddup!" click.
