DO you guys consider it essential, handy or unnecessary? Or even part of your ATTGATT?

I'd reckon you should wear it on the track & on the road, I do, too bad if its a little hot for ya darling. Lol2

Wear em under your full race leathers wether your on the track or on the road no matter how hot it is.
Broken Scapulas, Collabones, Fractured Vertabrae, Massive Phnuemothorax's. You can do without that shit. Even if there's only 1% chance of it saving your arse, wear one.

...n make sure you got good knee protectors n elbow guards etc in your leathers. Even if the leathers have a built in back protection, double up with one of those jackets & it might keep you out of a wooden box or wheelchair.

+1 what Grunty said. It's essential if you want to really really protect your back, otherwise, not essential.

It's a bit like opinions on helmets. Some fit some heads better than other heads, and all are pretty safe. Once it's on you forget it's there, unless you're throwing yourself all over the bike on a race track.

I'd go to a shop, look at a few, try some on, consider the price, and buy whatever you feel is right. Probably best to stick to the longer ones that reach down to the tail bone, than some of the "trendy" little ones that protect about 3 of your vertebrae!
