Thermo fan and relay
#1
Everything planned out for motogp weekend, right?
Wrong!
Drop off Busa last Friday at local workshop to change out swing arm and shocker - don't have all the tools myself.
Busa falls over while in workshop tail fairing smashed and has to be repaired painted and stickers. Painted on Monday but has runs so needs to be done again - that's a great help. Pick it up on trailer and put the fairings back on. Then it won't start cos ( I eventually find out that the new clutch lever doesn't activate the isolator properly). WTF. Take it for a test fly today and it overheats. Thermo fan not kicking in. I put a new radiator on last week and must have f****d the thermo probe? Want to leave for Phillip island tomorrow so bridge out the thermo and fans work ok. So make up a switch so I can turn fans on/off manually. Works ok but looks like shit.
Question is: could I have an airlock in the radiator which makes the thermo switch not sensing properly ? Is there some special way to bleed the air out of the cooling system?
Bypassing the thermo probe still activates the relay. But it seems the relay is slow to 'click' - maybe it's the relay, then? How can you eliminate one or the other?
f*** me!
Should I read the workshop manual?
WTF!
Why do these things always happen the night before ya ready to go!

Anyway, we're a goer for tomorrow that's the main thing.

That is a big pile of a bad luck at once Pi_freak What sort of workshop have you taken your baby to? They drop the bike and want to just patch it up? I would not let them paint the fairings - replaced all damaged parts with new. Anyway your problem with the clutch lever is a common one if you have installed the cheap chinese levers. The idiots can not even make a proper copy of the good stuff. As far as the fan goes the sensor could be faulty. The workshop manual describes the way you can check it by measuring the voltage/resistance across the terminals. From personal experience the fan only kicks in if you stuck in a traffic jam on a 40 deg day. If you riding, there is plenty of cooling from the airflow to keep the engine cool. If you have the ECU editor software you can change the temperature range when the fan kicks in as well. Hope you get to the Island OK and have an enjoyable weekend Pi_thumbsup

Have you heard of the Murphy family? They tend to turn up in bunches when you got some thing you really want happening LOL
If relay requires full power to flip then I would suggest replacing that first. Often a thermo probe will trickle power on and you can loose a few watts. The electromagnet switching system (not sure if new systems still use that these days) of the relay can fail slowly making it seem like it works but only under full power.

Just some food for thought

Captain,

Genuine radiator? is there a blockage (swarf), Is there an air lock? Thermo fan won't kick in if the sensor is not sitting in coolant. Gen 1 or 2? Gen 1 has a bleed hose from the top of the thermostat housing - check it is not kinked. Gen 2 has a bleed screw. Remove to bleed air.

Goodluck.

Gen 1 original new radiator.
But I reckon I haven't bled it properly. (At all!)
But my hot wired fan switch is working ok and I'll fix it properly when I finish drinking all the beer down here at motogp.

In that flashing stuff they have these days apparently you can adjust what temp it'll kick in & out at.
