Front fork seals

My front folk seals are leaking,possibly from coming down a bit hard from riding on one wheel.Is changing the seals a job that someone with average mechanical knowledge do or should I take it to the shop.

i am in the process of still doing mine and its not easy but its a good thing to learn as well . if you want to save some dollars take the forks out and drop them into your local bike workshop and they can change them for you , when i was quoted by my local bike shop it was around the $350 mark for them to do it

To hard for me, you need to be careful you don't scratch the legs or it will cost a lot more, you best take them out to save labour & give them to a shop to do unless you have the correct tools other wise it will cost heaps more than $350

its not a big job, but you obviously need a way of supporting the bike.
I hung mine from an engine crane. There are two ways to get the forks apart, one involves using a rattle gun on the bolt at the bottom of the forks, and the other is using a tool to compress the springs and pull apart from the top. I did it by compressing the springs, and to make the too is pretty easy, no specialist machining required.

except in his first post he said he drilled a 7/16th hole to make the plate, but thats too small, maybe he meant 9/16th, as the shaft was 14mm from memory.

simmo $350 was the quote sydney city quoted me if i took the bike down there , $150 if i took just the forks down and i supplied the seals as well


i qioted wrong price the price is $220 if you supply parts , thats still cheap in my books for a set of seals ,

ok i just got off the fone with legend and he gave me some tips about oils and loctite and i have pulled the right fork apart removed the dust cap pried the old seal out very gingerly and i have replaced the the fork seal and all i need to is button it all up .


this is a job if approached the correct way can be done by any 1 , hell if i can do it im sure any of you lot can .

Thanks for your replies.I rang around in Perth, witch cycles in Rockingham will do them for $250 ride in ride out.I would like to give it a go but for that price it may save some money in the long run(if I f#*K it up) and give me more time riding than the bike sitting in my shed in parts.
