IMO - Good choice Bigfoot. Once you get past all the seamen, village people & other fag jokes it's a great job for a young single bloke 
Here's my tips
1. Don't take it too seriously - seen lots of good guys caught up the "pride of the fleet" crap and turn into wankers
2. Do what you're told, how & when you're told - until you know otherwise & have a bit of rank on your shoulder - then you can start telling others to f*ckoff
3. Don't let an opportunity pass. Get your arse on every course offered - electrical, gas turbines, diesels, hydraulics. refrigeration etc.
4. Get your trade papers and GTFO! Lots more $$ and lifestyle when you call it quits.
5. Don't get involved romantically with someone on the same ship (male or female) - save it all up for when you get ashore and play with the local talent. Lot less messy that way.
6. Probably the most important - Stay clear of old stokers offering to show you the golden rivet!
