Tyres

The bus is in need of a new pair of shoes, I was looking at either Pirelli or Michelin. I want something that wears well, I don't do much hard riding. My mates are on SV's and GSXF's, so I can only go as quick as them, any recomendations or preferences?

Hi Diablo,
I have Michelins on mine. Pilot road on the back and pilot power on the front. It's a good combo and might be what your after.

Thanks Turtle, I'll have a look at them. Last bike was a VN1500, so I havn't had to look at performance tyres for a while. The only tyres I know I definitely try to avoid is Bridgestone. The bus currently has Bridgestone Battlax fitted front and rear.

Whats wrong with bridgies? If you have the oem 56's then i can understand, they realy arnt the best, however they do have other tyres in their range. From the pace that you say you are riding i would recommend an 014 on the front and an 020 on the rear.Plenty of riders in the club use them and have not heard a complaint about them yet. Phuck its the phantom!

First up some rider info to help you judge for yourself. I do up to 1000k's a week on the 'busa. Around 480k's of that is comuting with only 1 good round-a-bout to have any fun on. The rest is fun riding up thru Tambo, cunungra, any windinng road I can find. No rossie but I do love my corners and don't have any chicken strip left so I don't mind getting it over. A few blats up to around 270+ but it is very hard to find places to do that where it is cop/public/myself safe to do so. I also love the odd power wheelie once again when it is cop/public/myself safe to do so.

Chewed up 056 by 6000 back and 1200 front and that was really stretching them. Way behond safe stretching ;)

014 on front and 020 200 on rear I got 12000 out of them. Realy stretched it to make this. Handled like a dog and flat spots so big it could stand up itself just about. Also invoked terror in the wet for me, didn't like them at all.

The last tires I tried are the Pilots Roads. At present I have 10000k's up on them. There is a flat spot but it is truely minor compared to the bridgestones. Lots of tread left and I recon if I play my cards right I might get 15000 out of them before they are stuffed. Might be optomistic but there you go. At any rate they piss on the bridgestones.

While I don't doubt they don't have the grip of the Pilot Powers/Race I do know they are far surperior to the other tires I have had in both grip and longevity. What was imediatly apparant also when they were fitted was the handling. First roundabout I hit with them I was shocked at how much better it turned it on the Pilot roads as compared to the Bridgestones.

I also have full confidence in the wet and have not had any "Events" with them like I did the other tires. Love 'em. They are definatly going on again when they wear out.

Ok santa you said you had a 200 on the rear for a start, did you have a 200 pilot on the rear?Im sure that would add to your flat spot problems. Phuck its the phantom!

I've just put the third set of tyres (fronts and rear) in 7000kms
These new ones are Brigestone 014 (f & r.) Can't affords to ride it hard anymore due to the cost, but even at normal speed these tyre are not bad at all.

Sorry rod, should have been more specific. Up until the pilot roads they where all bridgestones. For me and my style of riding I am getting far superior handling, grip and longevity from the pilot roads as compared to the various bridgestones I have used.

I actualy got the idea of using the bridgestone 014 on the front and the 020 200 on the rear from here. In fact if I remember rightly you pointed out that a 200 profile tyre would suck for the handling. I actualy didn't notice much if any difference from the OEM tyres. Except for realy shit wet weather performance. I can't say I was very confident with them at a track day at darlington park either. Lots of work to make the damn thing turn in at speed.

When I got the Pilot Roads I done a wobbler on the first roundabout I hit because it turned in way faster then I expected. Since then I have had nothing but confidence with the pilot roads. Love 'em. I would like to try the pilot powers but I do far too many miles far to quickly to keep throwing tires at the damn thing.

10K up on the pilot roads, plenty of tread left. Mucho confidence still in the rain (I have ridden in f'in monsoons!) and still much confidence in the dry. For me I couldn't be happier. Shane

Thanks for the input guys, I'll definitely give the Pilots a look. I know that 200/50/17's will fit on the rear instead of the 190/50/17's, but is there any advantage in the wider tyre?

Shane, you mention that you ride through the Gold Coast Hinterland quite a bit. do you get on the Gold Coast very often? Let me know the next time you are out, it might be possible to get some guys together for a ride and coffee morning. How about Saturday morning the 27/8/05?

P.S. I think this brings up 50 posts for me!!! Quote:If only she could wash and cook

The one day a year that we do TAX and you pick it

Definatly interested in some riding tho. Following week is the Friday night ride (1st friday of the month) at Springwood Suzuki and then there is the Memorial Ride on the Saturday morning after that if you are interested. From Slaughter falls thru tambo to Gold Coast for bike week I think it was.

As for the 200. Too close to the chain for my liking. Looks kewl but something about a chain scuffing a tire at big speed bothered me so I went back to 190. Couldn't be happier.

Damn shame about Sat, already got all my personal and company tax sorted weeks ago. Sometimes it pays to be anal LOL.

I was talking to a mate earlier, he had some concers about the 200 profile as well, something about the ratio between front and reart tyres. Most of the tech stuff goes over my head.

Looked at the Pilot Roads at Springwood Suzuki today, $299.00 for the rear sounds OK, but I'll shop around a little bit.

I'll check my diary for next week, I would enjoy the ride. If I can't make the ride, I'll definitelysee you at Bike Week though.

Thanks for the info Shane, hopefuly we can catch up face to face in the near future.
