Starter Motor clacking
#1
As some of you probably know, a couple of weeks ago I had the BTL modified on my 00 busa. The day after I picked it up the starter motor started to clack loudly when engaged on starting.

Surely this couldn't be anything to do with the BTL modification though it started immediately after the mod was carried out.

Any suggestions?

it could be just coincidence that this happened now but be careful if it is the starter clutch the Busa's have a bad habit of shooting the starter gear back into the case and causeing some real damage the main cause if it is the starter clutch is low battery voltage and the clutch not throwing properly mine went on my 02 and if i remember right it was around the $500 mark to get it fixed a lot less if you can do it yourself if it feels like the stater gear is jumping mate seriously get it fixed before it puts a hole in your case

I'm with Xiler8tor.

Assuming that your clutch & starter drive was reassembled correctly after the BTL mod...

If your bike was laid up for a while getting this mod done then your battery might have faded a bit....maybe it was on it's way out anyway..

Don't try to start it until you recharge or replace the battery. It could (& has) ended in expensive tears. There is a mod you can buy that strenghthens the starter idler gear boss. It is a machined collar that is a push fit over the idler boss to add extra support.

Basically if your battery is down, your starter can't deliver the correct cranking torque & the engine will "jump" over compressions & put real strain on the starter drive gears etc.

I've seen photo's years ago on La Busa's where the idler boss has cracked requiring welding or in the worst case, upper crankcase replacement.

I'd be push starting it until you resolve the problem.

BLT mod doesn't touch the starter drive.
Oh and the dud battery syndrome must be the most common problem in Busadom.
Replace battery or install a lead to your battery with socket and buy one of those trickle type chargers they sell for cars etc laid up for long periods. Plug it in regularly. Handy too, gives you a 12V socket if you need it, but if then you need to install a fuse as well to stop shorts affetcing the battery and causing wire melt down!

Dude damage is done now get it fixed before you f*** the block, once the clanging starts it is usually 2 late and the stater clutch needs to be replaced, when you do get it fixed buy your self one of those trickle feeds for your battery, I bought mine from Petes PitStop at a great price it will never happen again

Oh well. Took the Busa to Phil Taiton and they say the starter clutches are gone...like we didnt know.

Hopefully pick it up tomorrow with the new clutches in it.

I tell you what, they're a nice lot down at Phil's. I get a good vibe down there...seem honest to. Will go there more often.

Expecting discount for the good rap I'm givin ya PhilLol3Pi_thumbsupVery Happy

Now fixed. The problem was a worn bearing surface where the one way clutch ran over. New later model starter clutch is now fitted and problem is solved.
