My take on the Superbike School
#1
Did the Superbike School cornering course at Phillip Island over easter.

For those of you that have not done it, it consists of 5 theory sessions of about 20 minutes, each one followed by a 30 minute session on the track. Each session gives you something new to concentrate on and there are instructors out on the track to give you tips. You ride the track sessions at your own pace, so you can still have a good time of it.

In summary, the five things in the level one course are:
1. Increasing throttle throughout the entire corner
2. Starting your turn later in the corner
3. Leaning your bike quicker using counter steering
4. Keeping a more relaxed grip on the handle bars.
5. Looking well into the corner before starting to turn.

Each session has restrictions on what you can do to help you tune your skills, for example the first sessio you are only allowed to use 4th gear and NO brakes. Make coming down the hill into MG corner quite interesting (and scary).

I was very pleased with the course and found it very valuable. If anyone is considering doing it, go ahead, it is very useful and will add to your confidence immensely.

thanks for your comments.

i've been wanting to do this course for about a year and haven't gotton around to it. Cornering, after a mishap where busa was introduced to the asphalt , is a point of my riding that requires a confidence boost.

I did the stage 1 a couple of years ago at Broadford before I went on Tassie trip. The cornering school helped me that much, especially in Tassie where this is only corners. Was rapt with the school. Can't wait to go and do Stage 2...... or maybe Stage 4 where you Knee slide the whole way around.... if that is still available ??!!

Yes, they still go up to level 4, but I think it is level 3 that they teach you how to drag the knee (if you need to).

However, I think you have to do the levels in order. I'm looking forward to doing level two maybe this time next year, but I'll be doing quite a few track days in between now and then to practise what I have learned.

I forgot to say, the main presenter, Steve Brouggy is an excellent presenter. I've been to many work related seminars and stuff over the last ten years hosted by some very good presenters and I can say that he is up there with the best of them.

Here's a photo from the day.

Where's the trademark blue iridium visor Scott? Great pic, you must be getting around like a rat with a gold tooth with those new leathers.
You have mail.
Cheers Phil.

Just replied to your email Phil. As for my iridium visor- I need a new one, but it won't be iridium, just tinted.

The iridium ones look good when they are new, but I was very disappointed with the durability of the coating. I won't be getting another one.

Perhaps I shouldn't have used Mr. Sheen to clean it...

You better start wearing your leathers to our rides, Scott, so we stop looking like twins.
