Injector performance....

Saw this post at another site:

"Just received a copy of of a data sheet from a friend who had his injectors cleaned & tested by RC. A clean stock injector is supposed to flow at the rate of 250 cc/min @43 psi. The injectors that were tested before cleaning flowed
241,246,233 & 247.

After cleaning they all flowed around 250 cc/min. What is interesting is (1) the engine at the margin will produce/support 8 FEWER horsepower than an identical bike with clean injectors and (2) what is happening to the A/F ratio of each cylinder as the bike is being mapped at WOT ?

With the dirty injectors and an overall A/F reading of 13.0 to 1, the first cylinder would be running an A/F of 13.0, the second, 12.8, the 3rd 13.5 & 4 th 12.7. The average has been optimised but the individual cylinders have not "....

Food for thought or......... ?

So do you guy's run an injector cleaner in your tank?
I have always run techron in both my 2000 and 03
(about every 6th tank).

Thats why i like carbies,never a prob!
The set up of bikes(1 carb per cylinder)is still i believe the best way to go,no glitches,no hesitation,no electronics to bamboozle everone,its like the old vinyl records compared to cds.Linear sound pure and real,not digital electronics.The only reason manufactures went to fuel injection was 1.cheaper to produce and 2.easier to adjust to meet pollution laws.But hey bikes where never gas guzzlers like their 4 wheel opposition.

Well I just found it interesting that the bike was down 8 HP
with the dirty injectors, that's a lot of power, however presumably most people here would run injector cleaner & avoid that problem. Depending on riding habits, some people might not notice such a drop off in power.

Carbies ? OK in their day, but time & technology catches up to everyone & everything. Carbies were good for home mechanics as float levels, synchronisation & mixture were not that hard to adjust, but against that, the precision & reliability of FI are proven beyond all doubt. <i></i>

Precision and reliability?Precision ,if all your injectors are clean and your fuel pump is good and your filers are clean and all your sensors are right and.............so it goes.

I'm no mechanic which is why I agree with Rev on this count.
EFI is a clear winner as far as maintaining tune and remapping for different conditions etc.
Obviously cleaning the injectors is a job most people ignore but it makes a big difference to throttle response.
This is why a good long distance, high speed blast is the best thing you can do for your BUSA.

The loss if from a theoretical model, and indeed the A/F's could well be all equal with those injectors depending on each cyl's air flow capacity at various load / throttle position ..... they arent equal from the factory --- just having mixed stacks is a clue.

If you want to suss out A/F's across the board for max Power you'll need to trim each cyl, this cant be done with the std ECU alone.
Need Thermocouples and O2 sensors in each exhaust header for data ..... if you cant measure it you cant control it.

As for injector cleaner --Toulene can be purchased for $55 / 20l drum ( its what you pay a shit load for in those 350ml bottles-- its also a great Octane booster and not a bad fuel as well.

Hi Max,
Not sure about up there in Canberra,but down here in Vic there are mobs that actually do it on sight,for cars anyway,but i dont see why bikes would be different.
They use some sort of ultra sonic cleaner that uses ultra high frequency sound waves that cleans out injectors,not sure on what it costs or how good it is as i have never had it done.
Another thing to get your injectors checked for is dribbling.
Sometimes the needle inside the injector can wear and not seat properly which causes the injector to dribble if the needle doesnt seat properly,hope this helps,cheers....... Phuck its the phantom!<i></i>

If you have a 9V power source ie 9V battery you can clean them yourselves in an ultrasonic bath using Shellite for eg.

The injector needs to be fully open ( actuated ) to be cleaned.

I have also heard Rod about the insitu cleaning , however I cant see this being a complete solution. I'd be interested to learn how they do this and what are the claims for success.

Best to remove , have flowed 1st @ 6ms pulse then wide open @ spec supply pressure, check for spray pattern . If not up to spec then ultrasonioc clean, then repeat above procedure. <i></i>
