Hey JOCK,
A great ride if you've never done it before Jock, but you need to consider a bunch of things if your planning to go. These would consist of - many bikes do attend this event so be prepared for a mix of really great and friendly bunch of people 80%+ and then there is the other 20% of Super Hero's, Learner newbies, and ex moto GP riders...... and of course a LARGE number of fuzzies that go to boost the revenues of the local economy. I have done this ride a number of times. EVERY time I have been there have been crashes (small and large, and multiples of) and people going home "without a license" (hint hint). Would I recommend this ride YES but I would be very cautious of all of what I mentioned earlier if I was to go again... in saying this the roads are AWESOME... the riding is some of the best you'll find and you will enjoy your self quite abit. Conditions vary from very cold to quite warm.. so you'll need to go prepared for anything, and accommodation (pretty all accom is good) can run out fast so get in quick. What we tend to do now is go ride the same roads in a little more warmer conditions and with a lot less fuzzies running around.
Enjoy have fun and be safe.

1hotbusa and I have done this ride for the last 7 years or so. It is a fantastic weekend for an even more fantastic cause.
Raceworkx is correct, there are a large number of bikes (usually registered riders is equal to 2000+). Majority of riders are sensible, but as with every crowd, there is usually a clown or two which inevitably end in a crash....luckily though in the last few years the crashes has decreased and so has the severity of those that do occur.
The police are there in numbers, however they are generally pretty leniant. An example of this is a couple of years ago, a red P rider was riding a 975, not displaying P's, crossed double whites and was speeding and the police openly said, prior to the presentations which are just after the mass ride from the ski tube into Thredbo, that the rider was given a court appearance notice and was allowed to ride back to Thredbo.
If you feel like giving a Honda a ride, then there ae usually Honda test rides too.
I strongly suggest that if you are considering attending and intend on staying in Thredbo, that you reserve your accomodation now!
Hope to see you there.
I would suggest that if you are considering attending

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!
Yeah, I'm thinking of fitting in a trip before Tathra, so I will hopefully be there, as I have never been in that region. Sounds like a good trip to do with my 10 yr old son, throwing the tent on the back!
The voices in my head may not be real, but they come up with some dam good ideas!

Not sure about camp sites in Thredbo but there are some in Jindabyne (where accomodation is cheaper thatn Thredbo). You can always ride into Thredbo where the chairlift and tobogans are usually operating for the weekend and participate in the test rides and mass ride.
1hotbusa and I usually meet others on he Friday morning at ~7am at the servo on the Hume Highway at Pheasants Nest, if you decide to go and if you, or others, want to join the group to ride with (causal ride, not out to break speed records).
Maybe when the time gets closer, we should post up a meeting place for lunch on the Saturday.
