hey guys I need some advice on gearing I am currently running the 16/42 combo my weight is around the 115kg so is that the right gearing or should i try going back to the 17/40 I know the 17/40 would make it a bit easier off the line for me but would i gain top speed or lose it would my times go backwards or stay the same willing to start experimenting now Cheers Bill

Bill, you will be told 20 different ratio's to use, the best is stock, or 17-42.

Ask Marty Searl, and Shayne, stock is the best ratio, it is a good compromise between fast 60's and good MPH.

I don't realy know Bill
I went back to 17/40 (have tried 16 & 17/43 a few times) the times are still about the same, I'm going back to 17/43 for the next outing, at the end of the run (400m) you also don't want to be changing gears, at the end of the day its a fine balance of trying to get it all right to suit you and your bike.
17/43 is an animal on the launches but mine seems to bog down on the std gearing, if you can't get the first 60' right the game is over before you even start.
Good Luck

So Dave you reckon try swapping the front one first and see how it goes at the moment I am right on the edge of the rev limiter in 4th across the line sometime even shifting into 5th and simmo wouldnt 17/43 combo be the same as a 16/42 Cheers Bill

A bit different I think
one tooth change on the front = 3 on the rear
but I could be wrong, it has been know to happen from time to time as my Wife

so does that mean I am running a 17/45 combo now with 1 down on the front meaning 3 up on the rear + the 2 up on the rear i already have so going 17/42 should give me a bit more easier launches and a touch more top end am i getting this right guys Cheers Bill

Divide the rear teeth by the front teeth to give you a figure.
eg 40 divided by 17 equals 2.3529, this is stock.
38 / 16=2.375
42 / 17= 2.470
39 / 16=2.4375
40 / 16= 2.5
42 / 16=2.6
45 / 17=2.647
I have tryed all of these combos and more I also have an 18 front and a 19 on order, but on stock motor I think the best is stock ratio or maybe a 17-42, it does depend on your riding style, I found that my 60's suffered when i used a 16 tooth front with every rear ratio.
Personally I like a 17-41 this will keep you up around 140+ and if you can control your clutch enough you should be good for low 1.6 or maybe a 1.5, but I had to wait to get the 41 in so it might be worth juggleing your ratios around.
This is what works for me, and as I said I have tryed a lot of ratio's, I have a lot of sprockets in good nick if anyone wants to try the same out.

I will let a little secret out too, TLR's have the same output shaft as a Busa, but they dont make Busa 18's AND 19's, so you can get a cush drive front if you want to pay for it.

Sounds like the bug has taken another soul eh Bill?

Good work on the W/E BTW.

Gearing depends on how much ticker you've got off the line and what you want to cross the line at.

Try 'em all.

Leonard.

Bill, the 16/42 combo is so close to 17/45 --theres not even a ghants little pee wee in it. so 17/ 42 or a 43 maybe the go --- I dont believe 41t is commercially available unless specially made.
