Leaking oil
#1
Hi guys made a post on the american org, but they must be asleep.

Been experiencing lots of smoke in the past.

Found out recently it was burnt oil.

I think I've identified the source of the leak, a bolt.

No oil reaches above the bolt labelled in the picture below, but is everywhere beneath it, including the hose directly under it.

What bolt is this? It doesn't seem to have a symmetrical match on the left side of motor. What could have caused it? Is it the result of mal use? Is it plausible the leak is actually coming from here?

Seems to be hand tight, but I cannot get to it to tighten it (need one of those bendy adaptors).

By the way, the photo is of the right side of the bike, looking almost vertical.

That bolt screws from the barrels to the head tighten it up would be a good start.

OK excellent getting somewhere now, thanks Jason!

I ordered a flexible extension from the USA because I can't tighten it with the fairings there.

How could this have possibly happened? Isn't it very rare for an engine bolt to come loose? Could the previous owner have loosened it? What for??

the only reason you take that bolt out is when your removing the head which i doubt thats happened being a new model could have been from vibration. take the fairing off and have a good look around.

The nearby hose is oil supply to the head, more likely to come from there and be blown towards that bolt than the gasket leaking at that point , give it a good cleandown and stationary run it for a while (you can bridge the fan switch from the side of the radiator to keep temps in control )

Hey guys, another month gone and I'm still stranded with this bastard. I've checked it and cleaned it and ran it a few more times, and it seems the oil isn't coming from above, it's coming from below and collecting on it's way up from the bottom as it evaporates.

After cleaning inside it, I think it might be coming from the actual header itself, this is the first point at which the steam seems to originate - where the right two headers join to become one.

Anyone know why/how the HEADER would be leaking/burning oil on only ONE side after 2-3 minutes of idle? NB it's definitely oil, not exhaust fumes...

Update on this guys, apparently it was the head gasket so 200 points go to Maj, well done mate - can you throw and ideas on the cause of this on a 5000Km old bike?
Covered under warranty, such a relief.
BTW Maj getting some money in soon, will probably call you up for a tune if you're still doing that. Would you also be game to fit a full brocks exhaust, fully paid for of course.

That would be Jasons pickup, i was thinking of the hose to the head,
or not mentioned but there is a drain from the sparkplug hole that emerges under the header, and a cam cover gasket fault near the sparkplug wuld drain via this hole

I would be surprised at a head gasket problem presenting itself this way, unless that bolt was loose from new and just weeping oil, in which case tightening it should have worked.
Also not a hope on Tuning, Already had to keep putting a couple of guys off as my work is looking to be very busy for the next 3 months, and i don't know who i could recommend in Vic,

No problem, I'll ask later down the line.

They said it was leaking and I'm waiting on a replacement, which suggests more than just a loose nut...I'd would love to know how this happened on a new bike.

BTW sorry, nice guess Jason!
