Rave, I have spent time as a locksmith's offsider a few years ago and I can not give you a direct answer.
However, if the GEN 1 barrel is a typical bike ignition barrel, you won't need to replace it.
You will need to get it rekeyed though to protect the bike. Remember that the same key opens the tank and hump lock as well but not the entire length of the key is used in those locks, so removing one of them won't enable the locksmith to cut a new image but it could give him a good starting point.
A Master Locksmith can repin all the locks to suit a new key and that may be your cheapest option unless you can get an ignition and keys from a wreckers and just a new key cut for the tank and hump.
To remove the barrel when it is in the locked position, you would normally have to have it picked and turned to unlock the latch.
Maybe some dissassembly around the steering column will prevent having to do this.
A Master Locksmith could normally pick the lock but you may have to pay by the hour unless you sweet talk him into the challenge or know one who can do it for you.
Hourly rate is APPROX $65.00
A GEN II ignition is a whole different story and would cost big time to replace.

take the top tripple to a locksmith and get a key cut, will cost around $45 ( my last one did about a month ago)
you can even remove the switch from the trippleclamp if you have a security torx bit to suit
