What engine oil do you recommend.

Eventually I decided on Shell Semi-Synthetic named VSX4, rated at 10w40. Springwood Suzuki use it in their workshop and the sell it at $59.95, which is a similar price to the other ones recommended to me. Also, I saw a K@N air cleaner on ebay for $115, pretty cheap.

Undecided What is the harm in switching to a full synthetic oil at low kms?

My 08 is nearit's 6000k service and I was considering going to full synthetic. I figure the engine should be completely run in by now so there would not be any bore glazing issues etc.

Has anyone had any warranty issues that have been related to using an oil that is not recommended by Suzuki (do Suzuki support the use of full synthetic if problems arise)?

Some people have said it's not worth changing the oil any sooner than the service intervals. From my understanding I'm inclined to disagree if it takes a couple of years or more to clock up the km's. The detergents and additives in mineral based oils break down quicker than that resulting in poorer oil performance, particularly in avoiding sludge deposits.

It is your bike and your choice. If you only do 6,000 ks a year or less which is only 115 a week then use a high priced oil for piece of mind.
Personally, I don't think that for road use there is any advantage in using full synth.
The recommended oil will keep the engine running in peak condition for up to 10 years or more.
How many people keep a bike longer than that?
Changing the timing chain and guides every 5 years or so is a much more likely to keep the donk in tip top shape.
They will wear regardless of the type of oil that you use and they are the only parts that probably will wear out within 10 years apart from clutch plates.

hi man,

prior to my rebuild ( way over 120,000km's) , i didnt change oil regularly, atleast 25,000 between oilchanges of semi synthetic motul ( although i may have squeezed a filter change every 15,000) and i thrashed the ring out of the busa ALL the time
when i pulled the engine apart, i was AMAZED, because everything was in top condition

no staining
no sludge
no marks on the bores or bearings ( mains+ bigends)
no scoring on the followers or cam.

it was in impeccable condition.

there was some " clutch" material in the pickup strainer, ( origional clutch with welded BTL) thats it!

it spun me out...

needless to say, i am sticking with MOTUL semi synthetic.

Whilst on the subject of oil, can anyone tell me if MOTUL 5100 is semi or fully synthetic? Thanks.

Hi tempOzzy,

Dan85 asked 5this in July so worth reading his thread - search on Dan85.

Most recommend not to use synthetic in first 6oookm. For some reason synthetic does not allow the parts to bed in properly resulting in poor compression etc - at least that was the advice about 12 mth ogo. This was published in one of the motorcycle magazines and was a quote from an oil co chemist (who also made synthetic oils). After that synthetic is OK.

What is important - the API/SAE rating - lower rating API in a synthetic will not be as good as a higher rated conventional oil.

I used Motel 5100 Ester prior Mobil Super Syn and was extreely pleased with the Motel looking back. The Mobil Super Syn defenitely made my clutch seem slippery and shudderry. I'm sticking with the Motel 5100 Ester.

Motul 5100, changed every 5000km. It worked a treat on my 3 oil cooled GSXRs as well. I figure $60 is a small cost to make sure my $11,000 bike is always ready for a few revs.

Bugso- what's the difference between the Motul I use & the one you use? Also, I change the filter every time but do I need to? Thanx for your advice once again.

go to jaycar and get a large rare earth magnet and stick it on the end of your oil filter. All the ferrous <20 microns grinding paste thats in your oil from all the gears, camshaft etc catches and stays in your filter, its the stuff you see on your sump plug magnet.Just put the magnet on the new filter each time you change it.Cut the filter open with the magnet still on it and see for yourself.
