My First Busa - horndog - 07-01-2008
Will hopefully have my first Busa this weekend!! In the midst of finalising a deal on an 03 Black/Silver to tweak for the 1/4 mile.
It will be sad to say goodbye to the R1 but I must go quicker!!
Now the question is bang for buck? After my week of internet research, I am thinking 1397 bore kit with intake cam on the exhaust. PC3, wideband commander(already got one) and slammed. I figure I can get away with the standard clutch for one or two seasons with only locking the BTL.
Can anyone suggest better value for money? I will probably be limited to $2-3K spend in the off season. the only aim is to get down the quarter pronto!! Swingarm extension are out for the short to medium term.

turbo is wayyyy better value & ultimately much more reliable & is more controllable. There is plenty of support out there for turbo busa's as well.

Glad you found the right bike, you wont be dissappointed!
From what you have said you are on the right path, just depends what you want to race it in, Mod or Comp. What exhaust did the bike come with? 16 T Sprocket is a good start as well. Have you spoken to Todd from The Bike Garage, he has a couple of quick Busa's over your way.

You will get better results doing suspension/chassis mods including lengthening for the quarter than adding power, nothing slows a run down like backing off because of a wheelie.

Thanks for the input so far guys.
Some quick responses......
- I will be running mod bike but have considered comp bike as an option for next year provided I can be competitive with the other guys. I definately dont want to go down the wheelie bar path.
- What is the cost of a turbo package for the Busa, would it compare to a bore kit and cam price?
- As finances permit I would like to work towards an outlaw turbo setup over the next X amount of years (factor x is determined by marital status)
- I will definately be lowering front and back and pushing the back wheel back, also will do the gearing -1 front. Is anyone running +2 on the back?
- Is anyone running cut down forks? If so, how is the mod done?

Horndog! Good to see another Busa boy in the west and drag racing as well.
Hope to see you down there soon. Mines been laid up after last year's little indescretion, but tomorrow night it's back on track.
Lowering links. Don't buy the ones advertised all over the place if you want to change to standard height regularly. If you do, I can show you links that make that exercise easy. If you're going to use it purely for drags and always slammed, then custom drill some, particularly if you stretch it. Need to maintain min of 50mm clearance (so they say).

I am thinking I will just keep it as a race bike. Are you saying custom drill them to achieve the ANDRA minimum height? Maybe just easier to dial it to the correct height on an adjustable link.
I was shown a nice trick on my R1 and that was to custom make some lower fairing mounts which spreads the mid section of the fairing out effectively lifting the belly of the fairing allowing you to run the bike even lower and still retain lower fairing.
I will run my last round on the R1 this weekend at the Nationals then its the Busa after that. (provided the deal goes through, looking at the bike tomorrow)
Does anyone know where the best deal on a PC3 is for the big girl?

I'll look for you this weekend. What colour is the R1?
The only danger with going really low is the pipe headers and sump. You'll see on other threads mention of different sumps to get the thing lower. And you can go sidewinder pipes to minimise the space they take up under the engine. But go for much harder fork springs though as even a small wheelie can result in damage to headers and worse, the sump plug.
Lowering links on the Busa are dead easy to make, straight pieces of 6mm plate, and for drag racing, steel is fine I'd suggest until you get it all sorted. Never tried the adjustables.
Not sure who has the best prices on PCIII, but plenty of sellers on the forum.

How did you run last night?
If this the 03 busa on auto trader the guy does not return calls. If you want a 1397 proven busa my mates will be for sale at the end of this season and this could save you a lot of coin as the bike is fully sorted. if your going comp bike no turbos so you will need to run 8.80's top be competitive as the 1000's are running well under the national index of 9.90 and a busa is 9.30. i'll keep an eye out for you. Again welcome. Busa's are SWEET.

Thanks Ian, I picked up my bike on Friday. It was the one on Trading Post, 03 model with 11000 km. It is very stock or should I say it was very stock. It went up the lift today and so far has had the airbox mod done and the mufflers off with the wideband and clutch lock up to go. I will also get a PC3 and a couple of other drag oriented bits when finances allow.
Maybe a turbo by 2009???
I ran ok last night, made it to the second round then couldnt keep the front wheel down on the R1 in the second eliminator. I rode it out in first and second but missed third and hit the limiter.
It was a night of suprises with Tony Wood out in the first round and Ewing out in the second. Maybe the championship could still be up for grabs!!
The R1 is now retired and up for sale.

At least you made the 2nd round as the mod bike field is one of the tuffest in oz. Tony's bike is the one that is going to be for sale. The busa you got is the one i was referring to. Congrats on the purchase. I might have an airshifter for you if your interested. Tony's still got a chance in the points with Adam out courtesy of Patto. See you at the track. I was talking to Tony on Saturday and he is very keen to do a turbo as well so we might do a bit of collaboration. From all reports though he may need to dump the bore kit before going the hairdryer.
I am interested in the air shifter so if yo want to PM me with the details and price that would be good.
I heard you sold your Busa, when are you back on the track?
My new Bus will be present at the next Nationals.
