Its just mathematical based, first time I saw this I was like "wtf is going on...how the fark!" but if you look at the symbols, they occurs multiple times through the board of possibilities & you can also only pick a two digit number. Note that you also have to do addition & subtraction which makes it easier for them to apply a formula to it.
If I could just pick a number & they could guess it I'd be very impressed...
