Engine rattle/tapping on startup - Kompressor - 27-09-2007
Hi
My '05 busa has 19000 k's on it. It's been serviced at 1k, 6k, 12k. When I start it in the mornings it taps and rattles until it gets warm, upon which it sounds perfectly quiet/normal.
Is this normal? It sounds fairly noisy to begin with! The oil is fine, and its going in for a minor (which just does the oil really) soon.

Use some Militec in the oil ,does make a diff. I think Mechanx has got some up there in Qld.

If in doubt, have it looked at, it may be nothing to worry about, then again, major engine damage may be just around the corner.

If oil level is even just slightly low, it takes longer to lubricate the upper engine parts.
If the oil level is ok, do as I have suggested in other discussions, warm the bike up for 20 to 30 seconds at above 2,000 revs. ( per the handbook ).

The rattle seems to be at about 2k rpm for the first 15 min of riding. Not the tapping, its like a rattle that appears as I decelerate of free rev at 2k.

As per Busgo warm engine at 2k otherwise your motor is not getting full oil pressure and thats not good, you don't have to warm it up for long, by the time you gear up is plenty....

I had it serviced and they said its a timing chain tensioner. I'm hoping it'll last ntil the next service 6000k and won't pop beforehand!
Anyone know how much these are? My service is a major so hopefully it'll be half open and they wont charge me a leg for it.

05s are OK from what I understand. Early ones were upgraded to same spec as yours.
Oil pressure used to push tensioner out as chain wears and every so often there's a mechanical latch that takes up part of the movement.
So if it's due to take up another notch, they tend to be a bit rattly.
Revving it to 2k while cold might just be the key to triggering a notch. Oil cold, therefore pressures higher.

There is no need for a manual cam chain tensioner if the lubed one is fitted as it is on an 05 model.

Manual tensioner is a very sturdy design, basically just a long bolt and a locknut similar to your rear axle adjuster. You just have to remember to keep adjusting it. Its cramped in there and make sure that the locknut is tight or watchout.
