16/42 Rear Sprocket - copperjosh - 10-04-2007

Hey guys, i'm looking to change the rear sprocket to a 16/42 for better acceleration down low. I figure since I never get to use the top speed of this bike I may as well ensure I can't be picked of by zx10's and friends down low.

Have many people here changed to this gearing? Are there any better setup's for faster acceleration. Keep in mind, I still primarily want to use the bike for the twisties, no drag for me. I don't want the bike to be super twitchy, but I could definately do with more whack through 1st,2nd etc.

I'm not too concerned about the front wheel coming up as I weigh about 97kg and its fairly easy for me to get my body over the front under hard acceleration.

Any recommendations guys? also, what else would I need to pick up besides the rear sprocket. Any particular brands? I could do with a new chain.

Thanks guys,

Josh

I would definately give the 16t front a try, you will be surprised with the difference it makes!

Try an RK Gold 530 or DID equivalent chain and look after it well.
It will reward you with longish life.
A 43 tooth rear sprocket is better for chain and sprocket life than a 16 front.

Ok, so 16t on the front, 43t on the back sounds like a goer yer? and I'll source one of those fancier chains...

Sounds good?

Forget that Josh - If you want your copper to go quicker, just buy a can of Red/Black paint - hey boys!:rocket:

or you could just leave your front sprocket the stock 17 tooth front and got a 46 tooth rear. i think abusa meant stock rear with a 16tfront and busgo meant a stock front and 43tooth rear. each tooth off the front sproket is equivalent roughly to going up 3 teeth on the rear sprocket. its a big difference to stock if you went 16/43 and from memory would see your busa sitting at about 5 and a bit grand in 6th at 120kph. correct me if im wrong those in the know. but maybe try leaving front sprocket and going toa 43 toth rear sprocket. did that on mine and the difference was noticable but not hugely that it affected cuising down the highway.

Yep, as Dan said.
Speedo will be way out if you do both sprockets.

RE: 16/42 Rear Sprocket - Ward P - 10-04-2007

have the standard front and 43 rear on mine, it definitelty helps in the twisties, but makes bugger all difference when highway cruizing. a couple of ks out at 110.

either way it's cheap seat of the pants horspower.

Onya Ruffy!

Yeh, I'm with Wardy. I love the 17/43. Plenty of acceleration. Going 16/42 may be too much. Believe me, 97kg won't be enough on the front to keep it down!

Shit Im going to have to agree with the Panster on this one Idiot2
on you front sproket (std 17) it has a crush on it to stop noise, unless you like a bearing type noise when you ride, go the 43 on the rear Pi_thumbsup

RE: 16/42 Rear Sprocket - Gnarbunkle99 - 10-04-2007

Ruffy got it right, Pan agreed and so did Simmo, i'll third the motion, motion passed get a can of red spray paint!!!

RE: 16/42 Rear Sprocket - copperjosh - 10-04-2007

Lol @ red spray paint Very Happy they do look nice...but i think i love the original! Thanks for all your advice guys, definately think i'll avoid changing the front sprocket, Max mentioned the vibration thing before too so i'll probably just take the rear sprocket up 3 teeth as suggested.

Still hard to believe 3 teeth can make such a difference? could you not do 45? or 46? as you guys have been with the busa's much longer than me, i'm more than open to your advice. after 43 does it get a bit mental or what???? i still want rideability....Just don't want gixxers and friends nipping at my heels...

cheers guys Very Happy
