Speed Cameras - ressac - 18-07-2003

Maybe they've got it right? Article in the Age suggests speed cameras help save lives. If it helps reduce the chance of getting slammed by a four wheeled lunatic, maybe it isn't too bad. They did say that current stats suggest 80,000 tickets get sent to save one life. All we need now is a motorbike only lane, and unlimited speed restrictions for two wheels. Book 'em Dano!

PS. So long as they don't put cameras on the twisties in the country, I'm happy.

Re: Speed Cameras - Throwdown - 18-07-2003

I can't speak for cameras in Australia yet, although I've been let off for four so far, (maybe because of my UK licence, but don't know) However, in the UK the cameras are revenue raising mainly, and they need to admit it.

Deaths came down in the first year only, and they have been at their previous numbers for some time now, and yet they still put up more cameras.

A lot of councils could not survive if not for the money they get from parking tickets and cameras. London boroughs like Camden couldn't believe how much money they got, and now some of the over-zealous traffic wardens are booking illegally parked cars at 2.00am. How is a guy causing an obstruction at 2.00am. The one I saw was a delivery man too. THE GUY IS WORKING FOR GOD'S SAKES!

Recently, councils have been allowed to keep 100% of the money gained from traffic violations, which means they don't complain to the central government anymore when their budget is cut, because they have found the goose that lays the golden eggs. I can't see how that policy is related to road safety or keeping deaths down. They spend the money on schools and libraries too, not more parking spaces.
