For the body types owned by the guys on this board this should be a good indicator, - more reliable than those breath test you can buy.

Find the unit rating of whatever you'll be drinking on a night out. For this example I shall use light beers as calculating throughout a drunken evening is easier (trust me, and get the taste for light beer). Full strength beer is one and a half units, for the die hards, while lights are one unit.

The equation is units drunk minus hours drinking divide by a 100. Easy!

You can blow .049 and be legal, - .050 and you're in trouble requiring a good lawyer. So, you're out for 6 hours and have drunk 2 light beers an hour. Can you drive?

2 light beers an hour in 6 hours is 12 units.
Minus the 6 hours is 6 units.
Divide by 100 is .060 (you're nicked).

Same 6 hour night out. You drink 2 lights in the first 3 hours and 1 an hour after that, can you drive? Well, thats 9 units, minus 6 which is 3 units. Divide by 100 is .030 (your home, with 2 lights to spare).

Lastly, make sure you eat, particularly if you're borderline and it'll work for ya. And before anyone gets all "the only safe way is not too drink at all" well everyone knows that, and this isn't for those people is it?

Enjoy Christmas.

Wow... thats incredilbly easy... at least I think so when I'm sober. Better you give me your mobile number and I'll call you when I'm pissed and you can calculate it for me. Can't be too careful. The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob

Talking like an idiot - Still safe
Talking like and idiot and hugging everybody - hmmmm borderline
Having the nice fireman cut you free after your head gets stuck under the beer tap - give the keys to the guy with the shiny shoes and the holster

Are you sure, that means

4 full beers an hour in 1 hours is 6 units.
Minus the 1 hour is 5 units.
Divide by 100 is .050

or have I got it wrong somehow
I would never drive after 4 beers in an hour
Cheers Robert

Simmo: In your example, you'd be okay after 2 hours. You can't count the first hour where you've done all your drinking - there's not enough processing by the body. Mind you, I wouldn't drive after 4 full strength beers in 2 hours either. It's a good guideline, but it's not magic and I wouldn't drive if borderline.

MrsTony: Nice one!
