how do you gut the stock mid pipes? someone said they had done it but not how? Fastest member of the canberra chapter......thats not saying much for canberra<i></i>

Look closely at the mid pipe, you will see a seam around the circumference. I cut mine with a plasma cutter. Be sure to mark around this seam in 3 locations BEFORE you cut to ensure accurate re-fit.
Once cut you have to remove 3 small tack welds from each end plate located inside the mid pipe. Simply remove inner baffling. When refitting align all 3 marks and plasma weld again. Heaps of difference in noise. I never measured the power difference on a dyno with just this mod, but with the usual mods and remus cans the difference in mid range and top end was significant.
Try this, remove your mufflers and leave the mid pipes on, start the bike and listen, hardly any difference. Now remove the mid pipes as well and re-start just out of the headers. That's how mush restriction there is in the mid pipes alone.

What about tuning ? does it run too lean after gutting the mid pipes ? Ive gutted & re packed my std pipes & like the sound but could always do with some more free power

Yeah. With any mod to induction or exhaust I always re-dyno. It's the only way to accurately measure performance differences. Unfortunately with this mod, it was part of a variety of mods done at one time, so I can't say what difference just this mod will do.

perhaps i'm missing something here, but its a hell of a lot less trouble and not much money to take your mid pipes to any half decent exhaust place and get them to make up some replacement stainless ones. I can't remember exactly how much mine cost but they were cheap as f*** and there are no fugly welds to look at.
Just my 2 cents, I suppose there are still people who like to do things the hard way.

Your right Maggot, yeah would love to know, as the mod I described was a head f***. I looked at getting someone to make a new set but with the bends go in slightly different directions on each mid pipe and the flange that bolts back onto the mufflers it was too hard for anyone I asked.
If you have someone who has overcome this there maybe some work for them.

I\'' head down to the place I get all my exhaust work done on my cars and its where I got the mid pipes made up. used top be a mr muffler years ago but its now a small independently owned worshop that do good work and great prices. did my F100 full 2.5" system with extractors for $900 and that was the best price I could find anywhere. I'll try and dig up the reciept for the pipes and I made the flange myself as I run a factory that uses waterjets and do the cad designs myself.
I'll post up during the week how much cause if I cant find the reciept I know they'll still have a record of it.

yeah, sorry mate i've been flat out at work so i've been kinda busy to get to the exhaust joint. most places should have no problem taking the ends off your standard pipes and just replace the pipeing
