Rego - Boofhead - 03-06-2014
Hi,
Just a quick question. I've recently had major shoulder surgery and I won't be riding my gsxr for many months. I live in NSW and my rego is up for renewal at the end of the month.
On the RTA's website it says,
"Your vehicle is unregistered if the registration is not renewed by the expiry date. Registration can only be renewed up to three months after the expiry date."
What happens if you let it lapse past the three month expiry period ?
Selling the bike is not an option, I love it and will ride it soon as I'm able. However if I can avoid it, I don't wanna pay rego and ctp on something I won't use for possibly another 6 months.

if it's like Tassie (and sounds like it is) then if you don;t renew within the 3 month post expire period you will have to have a lapsed rego inspection... not sure of bike or what mods u have on it...
but if you rego it at 2 months 3weeks... your don,t but you are still paying for teh period you didn;t have it registered.
On a side note.. check your insurances because bike might not be covered by vehicle insurance or any home/contents insurance if not registered.. I had this issue with mine being shedded each winter

In NSW after 3 months or 90 days it just means instead of doing a pinkslip you will have to take it in for a blueslip instead.which means they will look at all the numbers to make sure that they match up and that everything else is in road legal order (same as pinkslip)

Hi in WA after 3 months you need to take the bike to the pits(examined) If you ride and get caught then the plates will be seized.

yep what busa rat said & it not that hard to get a bike pass so save your money until you can ride

Not sure about other states but in SA you can put your bike on a periodic use registration and have it registered only when you need it without any inspections bullshit. It doesn't cost any more. I have bike and the trailer registered like this. Just make sure that you insurance covers you when you not registered as some of the scam use that as an excuse if the bike gets stolen.

Hope you're on the mend quickly!
Write them a letter and request that the rego be suspended because of your operation etc. My mate did that in Melbourne and it worked ok?
I wouldn't try and do it on the phone, unless you've got four hours to spare!

Nice and simple, cheers. I only have one concern. I've heard of people getting done by highway patrol on the way to getting a pink slip (or in my case a blueslip) as the bike is outta rego, and their cameras pick it up.
Is there any exemption I can get from the RTA so this doesn't happen ? Because you know murphys law, I'll get on the gixxer with my freshly repaired shoulder half way to getting my blue slip
and a cop will get me, last thing I need with the year I've had.

in VIC, after 3 mths. you have to re-register with a new number plate (surrender old one) and obtain a road worthy certificate costing maybe $140. So cost of re-registering is almost as 3 mths rego anyway. A vehicle unregistered may purchase rego for 1 week for the purposes of travelling on the road for obtaining a road worthy certificate and for no other cause. If it was my bike Id just pay up current renewal, if off road for a year then would go through the process of re-registering.

Boofhead in nsw if you are riding it from your house to the closest repair shop/inspection station and you have an appointment at either then it's considered ok to do by the law.provided you know it will pass you should have no issues unless it's the dept of highway robbery being a prick

Its OK in NSW if going to nearest practical rego instection. I have done this and was stopped by the police. Have an appointement booked and keep a copy of this from the Rat website with you

Unregistered light vehicles can only be driven in NSW for the purpose of obtaining registration by the most direct or convenient route:
To the nearest convenient motor registry.
To the nearest convenient vehicle inspection station or authorised safety check station to determine whether the vehicle complies with the applicable vehicle standards.
In the course of inspecting or testing the vehicle to determine if it complies with the applicable vehicle standards.
To the nearest practicable weighbridge to determine the weight of the vehicle.
From a motor registry or safety check station where the registration of the vehicle has been refused, to the nearest convenient place where necessary repairs can be made or where the vehicle can be garaged, unless a direction has been issued that the vehicle must not be driven before the necessary repairs have been made.
From an authorised safety check station to the nearest convenient place where necessary repairs or adjustments can be made or where the vehicle can be garaged.
To the nearest convenient office of a licensed insurer for the purpose of obtaining Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance.
To the nearest convenient location for any other purpose directly associated with the registration process.
If you are caught driving an unregistered vehicle by police, you may be asked to provide evidence that the vehicle is being driven for the purpose of obtaining registration. For example, a copy of the vehicle safety check inspection report or CTP insurance certificate with a receipt showing payment for that day.

Hi all,
Just an update. My shoulder is getting better and the bike is coming up to that 3 month pink slip cut off busarat was talking about. Generally, is the cost of getting a blue slip substantially more than a pink slip ?
Also the bike needs a new rear and service, does anyone know a good honest mechanic in Sydney? (south side) my guy has moved to perth.

One thing to also look into..
In Tassie if you let your vehicle run out of rego but get it re-registered before the 3 months they actually back date rego start to what it was... so effectually you LOOSE that rego period due to back dating. I used to leave bike for 5-6 months and then start new rego period when re-registering

Oh your kidding, what bullshit. I hope that is not the case in NSW, I guess that's another question for busarat ?
