Protection? - 06BUSA - 03-01-2014
Went for a great ride today but was just over 40o C, left the Hayabusa jacket at home and rode in a T shirt, jeans and boots, my thinking is if we don't ride crazy to a point of almost falling off, isn't it worth riding with little clothing and enjoying the ride than wearing a hot jacket and being miserable??? What's your thoughts??

I'll always gear up. There are lighter jackets out there for summer, but riding not geared up is a biiiig question you have to ask yourself.
I don't trust drivers, so I ride all geared up all the time.

The trouble is I've never had a close call with another vehicle for years. It's like when we went to the states 5 months ago and had a day riding a Harley without a helmet on. It's was great! Lol. I guess it's all a risk

I gear up to suit the ride, then just run the risk. I've always got jeans, jacket and gloves on at the very least!

I always gear up regardless of ride length, intensity or weather.
Leathers, good gloves and boots, and helmet of course.
They are called accidents for a reason, we don't plan on having 'em.
Remember, it can be the difference between walking away a bit sore or with relatively minor injuries and being out of action for weeks or months.
Just my choice, but everyone's entitled to make their own of course.

There's bugger all difference in protection between jeans and shorts. First bounce and they're torn to bits.
Where I live there is bugger all traffic. In the hot weather I wear the minimum if I'm cruising and not hooning. But do cover up, more for sun protection than worrying about coming off.
If I'm planning on going hard, it's full leathers and armour - but still haven't even had a near off in the last 15 years. - Must be going soft!

In the good ol days, before the DWD, when I went swimming every day, was quite often 38 deg C in the bell on the bottom in 220FSW in the Gulf Of Thailand. Was a bit warm if ya copped the job of bellman, but, ya get used to it. & in Ragheadsville was quite often 38 deg C on deck, & them 60FSW bellruns in Saudi, but ya get used to it.
Nothing to stop anyone from buying a full set of race leathers for the road, & hey, you can even get a set with holes in em everywhere. Their cool.
You'll usually find you'll get a lot more respect out of the Coppers
when they pull you over & more of your speeding fines will reduced to 10 overs instead of loss of licence

i always wear glove , leather jacket & helmet when it,s hot but i do wear shorts when i ride to work
don,t know why just do but for weekend rides when i ride with mates it,s full leathers no matter how hot

With the ever-increasing number of dickheads on the road, I don't think you can afford not to gear up. I prefer my skin attached to my body, not smeared across the bitumen. I'd much rather be sweaty & uncomfortable, than have a scab that runs the length of my body. I did duck down to the local shops a while back with jeans & t-shirt.......felt really nervous....no good.

All it takes is an oil leak or diesel fuel container leak in the back of a ute on a roundabout or up a windy road and there scrubbing dirt out of your arm , back or palms
its not comfortable believe me
Young and stupid cost me a lot of skin on several occasions till i learnt
there are good breathable jackets and pants , well worth the extra expense

I have a nice Hayabusa mesh jacket wore it the other day with draggin jeans
felt naked
its full leathers and a back protector these days, sure its hot when your stopped but its cooler when riding

Sounds like the concensus is to wear full gear, I've had a look at the mesh gear from BMW but they know how to charge! Does anyone know of reasonably priced summer jacket and pants??

I used to be a Squid when younger.. All sand shoes, jeans, t-shirt with the only safety gear the helmet (and that was removed often when out of town). I guess it's the idea of being indestructible that young has??
Now I wear full gear most of the time, though I have riden without gloves on hot days, or used just a fingerless leather glove....
The way I see it now is that an accident is exactly that.. Shit that happens without warning... Yes we can invite accidents by being more careless but even e safest rider can have an accident because shit happens.
So how much pain do you want when the shit happens that's not your fault?

With full gear when I get hot I have pulled into servo and pored water down the inside of my jacket . You get some strange looks but if it cools you down who cares

I bought a Joe Rocket summer jacket of Dale a year ago. It's got mesh, lots of armour and it's perfect in hot conditions. Send him a PM. He may have some more...
