hitch-hiker from the deep - CaptainRob - 22-03-2013
My younger daughter is a sub-sea engineer and tells me that this hitched a ride back to the surface on the ROV (remote operated vehicle) from nearly a mile down. I think its called an isopod, and you can get an idea of its size from the handgrips.

It kinda reminds me of super magnified dust mite.

We caught this just last week..

It got blinded by the lights on the ROV and smacked our SCM running tool while we were running it down.
Speared itself into the mud and the ROV grabbed it and brought it back up.

Was filleted and given to the galley to prepare.
They made some nice meals out of it, reckon they'll still be eating it in a month's time.

What ship are you on and what ship in the background?

Rob, we were on the NOR Australis.
The FPSO in the background is the Nganhurra (Woodside), looks after Enfield/ Vincent oil fields.

We're screaming for people at the moment.
Preferably need a mechanical trade, ideally with hydraulic/pneumatic experience.
Electrical would also fit the brief too.
We've had a new starter last week (mech fitter) he should be on the Attwood Osprey drilling rig tomorrow lunch time. Never been on a helo before so we stirred him up this morning before he flew to Perth. He'll be shitting red bricks tomorrow before he flys offshore.

Big shortage in my game too. No-one wants to go to sea anymore. So they bring in people from overseas on 457 visas to fill the gaps. That's all professions; masters, mates, DPO, engineers, IR's (sailors). So the future doesn't look so good as the numbers don't add up. That's one reason why crusty old farts like me still get chased for jobs! I teach in a TAFE college (I teach Shipmaster 4, at SEAMEC, Lakes Entrance, during my leave) and they'll be pushing to get 10 students a year. The Offshore Oil Industry work on ships is pretty good though. You get 1.153 days leave for every day you work - that's 7months leave in 12 months, so you're home longer than you are away. Which isn't much use to me cos my wife gets the shits with me after a week!!

Huge shortage in the subsea oil and gas industry at the moment.
Inpex are looking at spudding 80 subsea trees, which is unheard of in one hit- never been done before.
Approximately $20Million per tree, much like the ones in the link below.

GE Oil and Gas have secured the infrastructure and have poached a lot of guys from other OEM's (Aker Solutions, FMC and Cameron).
They are still chasing more people now, they'll start you on $120K/ year base rate and $410/ day offshore day rate on top of that which is not too bad for a new starter with their company.
However you do need offshore experience, preferably in Subsea or they wont bother.
