What's your job? Tell us what you do - DjPete - 04-02-2013 ok. Well I left school at 14 and did a motor mechanic apprenticeship then worked at a place that specialised in Merecedes and Jaguar cars as well as overhauling automatic gearboxes. I was pretty good at the auto gboxes by the time I left about 7 yrs later. I then worked at couple of places, Mini World in Eliz St Melb specialising in minis and mokes and then a brief stint at a Ford dealership. From there I moved onto Ultra Tune (this was when they first started up $39.90 for a full tune with 6 mths warranty, cars were lined up and we would do a full dyno tune in 30 minutes! lol) After about 5 yrs of that I realised I didn't like getting my hands dirty and a friend suggested that I try a sales rep job for Syme newspapers. Didnt get that job but did a get one for Leader Newspapers. Within a few yrs got a promotion to Sales Manager and worked at various papers around Melb metro. Did the job for 21 yrs! But then Murdoch decided to get rid of all the dead wood, I was one of the lucky ones who got paid out NOT pressured out as some of the others did. It was very nasty times. Lucky for me i had been running two hobby businesses for 5 yrs prior. So I just fell onto those 2 jobs full time. And thats what I do today. I work from home running PPDJ Machine mobile dj business and Z Web Design web hosting, domain name registration and website design and building websites. Times are good. Make enough money to survive and no more stress of working for a boss. And that's why I have a bit of time to jump on here. Oh I'm also a computer nerd. there I admitted it. RE: What's your job? Tell us what you do - Dale - 04-02-2013 Thanks Rob, I found that story (novel ![]() I did my time as an apprentice fitter and turner with BHP back in the early eighties. When I came out of my time, I stayed on as a roll grinder in the hot strip mill for a couple of years. BHP then offered a sweet voluntary resignation scheme so I took the money and ran. Had enough to buy a new bike, so I bought the FJ1200 Yammy, and thats where my love affair for sports / tourers started. When the money ran out (shortly after buying the bike, new riding gear etc ![]() Now, 22 years after learning the CNC machines, I'm still doing it .. I now work for a very small business (the boss, myself and a young bloke who is a casual) and am reasonably happy. I couldn't ask for a better boss (he rides bikes too) and has turned into one of my best mates. I actually enjoy working the CNC side of things (I couldn't work a normal lathe or milling machine now to save my life), as some jobs can be quite interesting. And before anyone says "cool, a CNC machinist .. can you make me a .......", go to eBay .. it will be cheaper than I can make it for .. ![]() Hey Rob, you don't need a CNC machinist on your ship do you ? .. I currently oversee all OHS and workers comp for 40 aged care facilities and community services throughout NSW and SE Qld, which has a total of approximately 7000 employees. |
