Dead Black and Purple - Madmax - 02-04-2011

Got a call from Ryan - Masterbusa (AKA master-bater!CoolsmileyLol3Coolsmiley) He and his girl were out riding when they heard a loud noise coming from the motor, lotsa vibration then dead as he got the clutch pulled in! He managed to keep the bike upright until they got her stopped so they're both alright happily.

Heidi and I took her bike trailer out and picked up said dead black and purple. Lotsa oil on the outside of the motor and all over the left side of the back tyre. - always a bad thing!

Will take the fairings off and do an inspection in the morning. Hopefully not a fatal breakage and that we can get her back together. Finger crossed. Updates to come.

hate to say it, but that sounds like dry bottom end to me, isnt much that will come back from that, lets all say a little prayer

Lucky to keep it upright , i know how much mine squirmed around when i threw a rod several yrs ago , and this sounds similar... hope its not that serious

RE: Dead Black and Purple - Heidi1 - 03-04-2011

I'm astounded he kept it up too, oil everywhere.

RE: Dead Black and Purple - ducsguts - 03-04-2011

Ah the memories Pi_freak
When my old TLR threw both rods out their corresponding barrels and the gearbox lock solid in a rather spirited (if you know what I mean) straight line luckily. I remember the feeling was well one of confusion, fear and anger all rolled into one.
Good to hear no one was hurt and good luck with the repairs
Cheers

RE: Dead Black and Purple - BEAU - 03-04-2011

Glad to hear that there both ok. I hope the engine damage is not terminal.

RE: Dead Black and Purple - Masterbusa - 03-04-2011

Just like to add a massive thankyou to Max and Heidi for giving up some of their Saturday arvo to come pick me and my girls up. This sort of thing shows just how wonderful you two are.

The bike isn't in a good way :( it's got 32000 on it and has had servicing every 6000kms. Lots of smoke, vibrations and oil at the same time. Oil all over the left side of my jeans and boots. Wasnt doing anything strenuous on it, cruising at 100 in sixth for most of the trip. It still had plenty of power and didn't notice anything feeling odd... Just went splat and dropped it's guts. As soon as it happened I grabbed the clutch which seemed to kill the engine and put both legs down while I used about 100m pulling it up slowly with just the front brake.

The job to get her running again might be put to the background for a little while unfortunately... Me and the mrs have just paid for a 3 week holiday in Turkey. The bike may have to sit tight until we return.

I hope to get her up and running asap but there are a few things I have to do before that happens. Max has very generously offered to take a look and help me put a motor in when the time comes. Ive reminded the mrs its my birthday in July ;)

Anyone hazard a guess about what's bruck on it?

Ryan

Ryan try to determine where the oil leakage is originating from as this will give a pretty clear picture as to what troubles the purple beast.

I'm opening her up tonight Pete, to see what is happening under the fairings. I'll get back with details of where the oild is issuing from if I can see it.

RE: Dead Black and Purple - Madmax - 03-04-2011

The fairings are off and the news is pretty bad. A piece of case was sitting on the right fairing inside.

Once the left side came off I could see an exposed bolt in the top case.

And another crack that travels laterally across the front of the motor from the break toward the left side of the motor.

At this stage I can only surmise that the number 1 rod may have let go and done a number on the front of the motor. As long as the crank isn't badly damaged she's repairable, however, we wont know what has really happened until we open her up. The "why" of why it failed has me concerned. This is a 32k motor that has been babied and fully serviced.

On the other hand if you look at the placement of the break, could be as simple as a failed crankshaft balancer?? Wouldn't that be sweet?

When we open her up I'll be happy for any advice I can get from Legend or Pete, these guys really know Hayabusas inside and out, amonst others who are pretty good with these motors.

Ryan has a trip to Turkey planned so his budget is fully accounted for. We wont start work on her until he gets back

Max
