bloody hell - clutch shudder - Achilles - 20-07-2010
yeah g'day,
so new bike has arrived, and guess what, when going from 0 to 5kph, it shudders like no body's business, even got the chain bashing up and down I think FARK: pi_freak:
OK - I know, my fault, I trusted someone's word and he omitted to mention the fact that the clutch was farked, but here I am - one Busa with an a shudder that'd make Steady Eddy look like your average Joe.
Any ideas team? I am hesitant to take to Mr Suzuki, as I know it'll cost plenty!
Apart from that, the bike is in good shape - someone has over torqued the duck tail and cracked the rear fairing, seat has a small tear and LH front indicator is cracked - but that is about it.
Anyway - any tips would be appreciated (never pulled a clutch apart before).

Some member close bye should be able to help you its not that hard, Mr Suzuki $300 for parts after market e bay $200 ish when you do it put apart put a later model one in it heaps better it has a slipper ring in it, put in a 2002 or newer one in it

Only a couple of parts from a 01 or later is needed , go to your dealer and order the parts in a later clutch that are not common to the earlier , there will be 1 fibre plate 1 very thin diaphram spring and 1 seat for this spring ,
the seat first then spring goes to the very back of the spring pack and the replacement fibre plate goes around the outside of them, then the usual steel-fibre-steel till you have a complete clutch pack and the worst looking thin fibre of the set to hang on the wall as spare , sometimes a heavier set of clutch springs can improve the feel even more at a small cost to comfort

I recently bought everything new, including springs and got burnt $550 odd, but I fitted it myself which eased the pain - better the dollars go on the parts rather than needless labour.
I'd never done one before and the whole thing was done faultlessly in about an hour by just reading instructions from the manual and getting advice on the Net. You'll be able to do it yourself with a stand and basic tools.

thanks for your feedback everyone, but now what?
oh, and by the way - the 6 bolts with springs - one was half un done and the others had hardly any torque - i'm tipping this wouldnt help the shudder?

I had a score when mine played up, bought a clutch and majority of g/box for $350 off ebay. Had done 2000km according to seller but working great in mine and cured my probs of slip and judder. Mr Suzuki wanted $550 for the clutch and I wasn't 100% that was the problem at the time

The whole thing probably just neede tightening up.
That centre nut has a divot in it that is the only pain of the whole exercise - I drilled it out and bought a new one - $27 FOR A NUT. You can pay that when saving money doing it yourself, although there is proper way to get the divot out. I don't put the divot in, but I'm not a mechanic so don't follow me.
If you don't have specialist tools (i don't) and need the basket off, put the bike into 6th or 5th gear, hold the rear brake down to stop the back wheel moving, then screw the nut off - everything continues to be easy once the divot is out of that bolt.
Soak plates in oil before putting them on in the correct order - see manual.

Those 6 studs should be locktighted in , common prob for them to come loose , no need to remove the centre nut unless you want to get to the gps , few tricks to know if going in deeper , a service manual would help from there
Check the inner hub , will be loose if the back torque limiter is std ,and solid if its been welded , given your shudder it can't be welded, as that fixes the shudder but looses the extra tensioning on the clutch pack the btl gives

Agree with Maj - anything inside a motor that is prone to vibration and undoing should be locktited - from memory 262 ( red ) was sufficient - and loose bolts and certainly would not have helped the clutch and may be the main cause of the problem - the shudder is usually from warped clutch plates ( not visable to the nakid eye - which creates hi and low points where clutch runs over and grabs / slips . grabs / slips / grabs ect similar to having a warped disk rotor on your brakes and you feel the shudder in reverse - i.e when applying brakes - not a big job - but you will have the confidence now knowing you will have a LONG time of service with your new clutch - just go gentle on it untill it beds in and remember for wet clutches you need to apply the same motor oil that you use in your bike before assembly
