Salt Lake Speed Records on a Hayabusa - BikerBoy - 07-06-2010

Does anyone have any info, knowledge or experience on setting up a Busa for the land speed trials on the Salt Lakes in Sth Australia.?
Already joined up to the Dry Lakes Racers Australia Club.

RE: Salt Lake Speed Records on a Hayabusa - Maj - 07-06-2010

There is a few of us that have run in SA ,

What class are you wanting to run in,
for some classes its as simple as wire tieing sump plug, axles and pinch bolts, suitable gear without too many breather holes

Um mate you might want to just totally ignore what everyone else says and just PM Maj for advice. He was going fast on it before salt was first put on chips.

Thanks Maj,

Class... not sure. I intend to start off as basic as possible to get an idea if I really want to head down this track. I'm prepared to put a bit of cash forward to mods but aim to keep it all as simple as possible to start.
I figured lock wiring would be the obvious starting point.

For mods I was looking at heading down the weight reduction path first before anything else, but was curious for the need to consider suspension setups, lowering, sprockets etc...

Cheers, Paul.

RE: Salt Lake Speed Records on a Hayabusa - Maj - 08-06-2010

Forget the weight reduction and start eating ;)
its not like drag racng , weight is an asset
most NA bikes run 190-206mph depending on hp, gearing is important, std is very close for a 198 or so mph pass but one tooth less at the rear may be either quicker or slower .

A little lower is good , keep the bike level , but don't slip the forks through the top tripples more than 19mm , downforce from the windspeed over the front fairing can bottom the suspension out when you take the power off at the end of the run ... this captures the front guard with the nose cone and causes an over tight steering damper feel and has caused crashes in the US and UK and scared the crap out of me here .
otherwise std suspension is fine , you may reduce the rebound and compression to soften the suspension a little if its a slippery track
and be prepared to strip the bike on return to get the salt out , it gets everywhere , and hygroscopic , if you miss some it will drip on damp/foggy days .

don't need front brakes, better to remove them as its one less thing to get salt in, i had a long rear line made so my front lever operates the rear brakes, as its impossable to break the habit of using the fronts when loading and unloading on trailers ;)

RE: Salt Lake Speed Records on a Hayabusa - BikerBoy - 08-06-2010

Thanks for the tips Maj.

I'll be looking into this a bit more and going to Speed Week in 2011 for a first time visit and possible run (may as well if i'm going). I've joined up on the ADLR forum now too, so I'll be reseraching it a bit more. I also found a thread on the Hayabusa.org with a member modding his Busa just for Bonneville and it sounds as if he's been a few times before so I might drop him a pm too.

Again, thanks for all the tips.

cheers. Paul.

Checkout the runs from this year to get an idea of what a std/modified bike is capable of , for the busa (1350class)
P is production, MPS modified , APS modified beyond a certain level, G or F is fuel type, (gasoline or other) and B denotes blown , or if fairings are removed M or A instead of mps/aps
also current records in class and uncontested classes , some of those /P classes are pushrod, for tractors ;)

RE: Salt Lake Speed Records on a Hayabusa - Maj - 08-06-2010

Had fun Greeny, but it was not fast, been quicker on my 750 , but ok for it being my streetbike .
damaged the crank in my racebike a week before speedweek , which stopped a whole heap of development on my fairings , the main reason for my change from MPS to APS
To be fast here i would want 240 or better, Noonans speed of 235.7 is a good indicator of what can be done without too much effort but a ton of experiance

amazing what a forum search turns up!
It's been 2 years since I started asking around for advice etc... (nearly the exact date too...freaky) and I'm finaly getting ready to run on a dry lake. Yes

You'll have to keep us up to date on how it all goes.
As well as Greg, also saw another name I know. Roland, who I know thru the CBX club club. He owns the CBX classic racer 666 "the beast".

RE: Salt Lake Speed Records on a Hayabusa - Maj - 10-06-2012

Rolands ,and Phills bikes are works of art , i specificaly go looking for them each meeting

I see the bike team is full , a yzf1000 streamliner filling the last position

We were shaking down one of the Bonneville bound busa's today at Heathcote , ran smooth and clean, perfect :)
