Over Heating - DAN85 - 04-09-2006
For some reason my bike over heated. i was riding most of the day and the temp sat a needle width below the line all day then suddenly the temp went up into the red in less than 60 seconds so i turned the bike off. the bike was very very hot. i noticed the fan wasnt coming on, is that enough to make the bike get that hot that quickly? i was traveling about 50kph. also its full of coolant and couldnt find any leaks. any ideas? Have you had a look at the fuse for the fan?
are they still working?
did you lose any colant out of the over flow bottle
Or have you had your fan and radiator out latley, the fan
plug the goes back into the loom may not be clicked in all the

Over flow bottle is full. radiator is full. i had the fan and radiator out a couple months ago and they have been working fine since. just to be sure double checked the fuse and all plugs and they are all connected properly. so i have no idea richard. gonna check the rest of the electrical stuff soon just to be sure. ive got all fairing off the bike except the rear one and the naked look is starting to grow on me i shouldnt be allowed near things with a spanner and some allan keys. Strange how it just went hot like that, mine gets real hot arfter I've done 3 back to back runs at the track, but thats
just my 1397 getting a little warm.
Weird that yours just went up like that
any thing caught up in the front of the coors like a bit of
plastic bag or it may have bin blown up the front of your bike
and droped off when you have pulled up to let it cool down

hey Richard, does this sound familiar... remember Willowbank in April... Dan. I'd be checkin that your fan blade hasn't melted and stuck to your radiator core... it done it to me... it blew the fuse, i replaced fuse then fan started and ripped the core... check that it is not this problem Dan...

Happend to me once, travelling in the M5 tunnel in peak hour. The temp went up with in seconds and i just kept riding and as soon as i went out of the tunnel and rode faster it just went back to normal temp. Only happend that one time, never happend again. Wierd....

easy faulty wiring from what i can see. fan is fine i tested it and the fuse is fine. something between the use box and the temp switch. should be an easy fix. going to the auto electrician tomorrow

Hi there,
For a sudden rise in temperature like that I would be saying it was radiator fluid levels. If the overflow bottle was full was it also possibly going out the overflow. And you woldnt have known the radiator wasnt full as it's buried under plasticand hot in places.
I remember learning about temperature probes in motors and was taught that you could get a normal reading when the probe was not submerged at all, then you get a rush of water and it skyrockets. If the motor is overheating with a full flow of coolant the needle will rise at a consistient rate until you hit the red. Fan melting to the radiator would not cause a spike unless the failure of the fan put a voltage into the wiring harness. A couple of volts would be enough for a scale deflection.
Did you get that stinking hot motor smell at all? Was it stinking hot to sit on. Were you getting any oil smoke.?
