Bike Mounted Video Cameras - Monkeyfish - 04-02-2010
Just after a few comments and suggestions (smart ass ones accepted) regarding bike mountable video cameras. I've been searching the net and don't want to spend a great deal of money as this would be my first go at this. I have come across the "ContourHD 1080p" which seems like a reasonable cam for what it is. It looks like you can mount it in all sorts of positions (minds out of the gutter people) with the right attachments. Has anyone tried one of these little cams and what do you think?

Have not seen the one you posted but,
I've got the GoPro Hero HD which is sensational. $450.
The supplied mounts are great and it's quite small.
It does full HD video or you can set it to take a hi-res photo every 2 seconds.
It has a full 170 degree wide angle lens and also waterproof to 30mtr.
You can also buy a heap of other mounts for it and replacement parts are cheap

Thanks 'BikerBoy', the GoPro looks like a great camera with a couple of extra features; even the online videos look a little better than the ContourHD. The GoPro website has them for $300US.

I have that exact camera with a handlebar mount and a 16g micro SD card sitting in the shed waiting for me to get the bike back together. I will post some vid for you in a few weeks if you are still interested.
What I would say is that the GoPro does look the goods and I think it can take a 32g card? (might want to check that...
)

Agreed, the GoPro does seem to have all the goods but I do like the look of the ContourHD plus I think it it could be placed if a few more places than the GoPro. I have watched a few vids' on the net taken on the GoPro and they do look good, only thing I don't like is the fisheye effect, the view angle 170 degrees seems a little too wide, the ContourHD is 135.

Looks like we have the same train of thought. The contour HD 1080p (not to be confused with the contour HD) seemed to be the right one for me although I was a bit dissapointed that I still needed to buy a charger (only comes with a USB cable) and handlebar mount... But hey, so be it.
I'll post some vid for you when my bike is back on the road. Should have all of the parts by next Tuesday...

Just to comment on the ContourHD being able to be placed in more places than the GoPro.
Having used the GoPro I would not agree with that. The provided mounts and also the available extra mounts gives you so much flexability you can literaly put it anywhere on the bike or even on yourself.
As for the lens giving the fisheye look, yes it does at the 170 degree setting when run in either 720p or 960p mode, however when run in full 1080p the lens is set to use 127 degrees.

Thanks guys for the input, makes the decision a wee bit harder now. I think GoPro wins on features but the ContourHD 1080p wins on looks.

Definately agree with that.
Both are good camera's. Maybe get the specs side by side, check out the available extra's of each, footage time, battery life etc. and go from there.
