Pain in the ass to do especially if your not PC freindly on the tech side of things.

You can pull the hard drive out, put it in another pc (it will boot up just like it's your original)and backup the data to an external hard drive. When your done swap the drives back over.

Best left to someone who knows how to physically do it.

bugger. I would have looked at it when you got home for 3 slabs.
Good to hear its sorted.
Backup.
I am so paranoid of losing stuff now that I have the following:
1TB External HD hard wired and placed under the house (in case of fire) with mirror of my hard drive.
(Mirrors every 2 days)
Also my music is backed up on 2 laptops. One stays in the garage in case of fire!
And to top it off I now have My Docs and System backed up online with Carbonite (recommended www.carbonite.com)

I call it "Reds under the bed syndrome" Lol

@DjPete - What program do you use to mirror??

RE: files from dead computer - TimF - 25-01-2010

I use incremental backup software called Time Machine, has worked alright when I've needed it.

*&^&*^ there was a sudden loss of power - at home - just now. All electrical shut down for few minutes - my Mac got re-booted after 8 months...Not happy with the sudden surge in power supply.
