CPU over-usage - Volvi - 07-12-2009 We have been having a problem a little while now with CPU over-usage. Pete and I have been doing much trying to resolve this problem. Currently we are averaging 120% of CPU (servers) usage. We share the cpu with a couple of other websites so its not dedicated to us. We have in the past averaged 50% odd usage but lately its gone thru the roof. Whether its due to bugs, site attacks or simply the server having to 'pre-fetch' huge threads, I am not entirely sure. What I do know is that we have been issued with warnings now on a regular basis and unless we do something about it, we will face problems in the future. So if your a tekkie and have some knowledge on this by all means offer up your suggestions here in this thread. Thank you for your co-operation and we hope to have this matter resolved soon. RE: CPU over-usage - NEMESIS - 08-12-2009 So what will the problems be? A non functioning site? Or it runs very slow? RE: CPU over-usage - davegc - 08-12-2009 Probly stating the obvious here, ....but if theres too many modules or features turned on, lots of mess in the css, calls to things that are no longer present, or even database errors, this does crop up. Usually tho, its more simply the host trying to get you to pay more for what they offered in the way of bandwidth, but arent able to supply economically, so they use the old cpu trick. I note this site shares with a least 80 others on the ip, who knows how many jammed on the server. Do you have direct access to the sever stats ie WHM, or are they just telling you this? On the unpleasant side, and I have no experience with this particular forum software, but a lot of these open source ones either have, or had lots of vulnerabilities re injections of malware, usually rerouting porn through an insecurity. Check youve got latest version and do a malware scan on the public_html dir, theres a few programs around that do this. I have used similar open source programs, been hacked maybe 5 times now, usually not noticably either. Have a good look at inward links in the stats, see if theres lots of unrelated incoming links. I eventually moved my site to unshared, costs more but less hassle. Apologies if you know all this already. RE: CPU over-usage - BUSGO - 08-12-2009 I agree with Davegc on his thinking here. I don't see any significant change in the site, it's browser numbers or the amount of posts. What I do see is a lot of fake memberships cropping up all the time for no other reason but to access the server. The amount of cpu usage reported by the hosts is in comparison to the other customers. It may well reflect a drop in their usage and not an increase in ours, therefore requiring an increase in revenue. Appreciate any help from techies out there. Thanks Davegc RE: CPU over-usage - BUSABAZZ - 09-12-2009 Although i don't know anything about hosting a web site/forum i'd just like to add something that i was thinking could be part of a problem with cpu over-usage, a similar scenario was experienced on another forum i frequent (ridingSA) and it was due to people not deleting/purging their trash can in PM's and having tons of old messages undeleted.... i could be just pissing into the wind here but it was just a thought. RE: CPU over-usage - BUSGO - 10-12-2009 Thanks for your suggestion Busabazz. We should all look after our housekeeping better than we do.
