help needed - crumpy - 06-09-2009
was riding today bike started to stall when braking hard then seemed to run out of fuel coughing and spluttering when i accelerated past 4grand it was as though it was starving for fuel when i backed off it went again.so i cleaned fuel pump new filter.now it wants to start but only kicks for a fraction of a second.has anyone had a problem like this,any help would be appreciated.thanks crumpy.

Crumpet what year/ model mate ?
On reading your post again, it sounds like early external pump model ? Can you hear pump running ?
If so pull the pump apart again and you will probably find you have pinched the "O" ring on the nylon assembly that holds the filter in place. This lets it lose pressure internally and hence can't build enough pressure in fuel rail to run. No kinked lines ?

Damm Glenn, sorry to hear the old bus is playing up.
Thought we had all those old fuel problems sorted but I suppose the filter has to go again someday.
Must have a heap of ks up on it now.
I agree with ohdear and just want to add that I have in the past found the vacuum lines can get kinked with the tank drops down. One of them leads to the fuel regulator.

Actually BUSGO never in ten years on Busa's have I found the Vac line to the pressure reg to get kinked
Actually I would go on to say if you can get the vac line to the fuel reg to kink by putting tank up and down I'll give you a new Busa 
Further more my limited knowledge tells me that if you kink this line or even remove it completely for that matter fuel pressure will increase not decrease.
One would say you have no idea how the fuel pressure reg works from what you have written ?You just can't resist can ya DH .................
Now awaiting the 3 pages of explain away ? You keep pokin me with the stick and I'll keep biting ya

If it's a 99 I'll put a penny on the fuel hose kinking when the tanks down. Happened to mine and quite a few others. Check them thoroughly and maybe just go buy new ones and replace. With me it happened really quick, and the fix can be just as quick!

When i had the same problem with mine kinking, it usually happened after 20 mins of riding when things had heated and expanded - I fixed the problem by buying a couple of 45 deg copper pipe corners from Bunnings and using a hacksaw cut the length of it along the top then by hand opened it out and pushed the fuel hose in and closed it back around the hose finished off with some duct or race tape - same again further up the hose and no more issues, someone may have a better way to fix it but that was the cheapest and most effective i've found.

ohdear was spot on,still haveing fuel problems will idle wont rev, pulled fuel rail blew it out blew out injectors seem to be working, still not enough fuel pressure.fuel lines covered with coil spring which busgo supplied, cannot kink.any more ideas guys would be appreciated.shop is last resort do not trust anyone up here.

As per Bear and Ruffy's post would now look at fuel lines. There is even a diagram on the board somewhere from a previous post that shows correct orientating of the hose's as even when new they still must be fitted correctly. If you can get a fuel pressure gauge on would be also good ?Cheers ................... Hope all goes well as in 1 Hour 40 mins "Ohdear" goes on a permanent vacation
Crumpy just read your post again .................. the lines can kink even with the spring around them. The way the fuel hose lays across the top of the gear box can even cause surging whilst riding if not positioned correctly. Cheers

Crumpy - i presume you pulled the fuel pump apart and cleaned the small internal mesh filters when you cleaned the pump - your original post - and are sure the o ring is in place as per 1 of the other posts. Otherwise got me f%$(*&d

I found the problem dirty fuel,I cleaned the filter in the pump (like a dickhead)put old fuel back in it clogged up again found same filter clogged again.all good now thanks everybody for the advice it was very handy.i am in a better mood according to my trouble and strife.thanks guys.

Phil - when i did the above angles to the fuel line, i went to Repco and bought a Hi-Flow inline fuel filter (metal) and put it into the line. I wrapped it with foam and race tape - there is plenty of room in the 99's to fit this and i didn't have a dirty fuel problem again

Ps don't forget the filter in the tank, my old 99er used to cougth & fart when the fuel was low, at the bottom of the filter was full of crud, its just a plastic one easy removed, cleaned & replaced
