Stripped sump thread! - chunkylover - 22-08-2009

Hey all, was doing an oil change on my busa today. Upon removing the sump bolt i noticed the thread was stripped. A new oil pan is $230 + $16 for the sump gasket. I was thinking of using a helicoil to repair it, but not to sure if they have a helicoil for that size. Has anyone had this problem, and what fix did you do on it?

Any info will help. Thanks.

There would be a helicoil to suit. Other options including welding it up and retapping it, or tapping it out to a larger size and machining/finding a suitable plug.
I know in adelaide there is a company that specializes in thread repair, I would imagine there would be similar in other states.

What did you end up doing?

I am trying to find a helicoil kit for it, no one local has it, M14 x 1.25 (Correct me if i am wrong). Been to nuts and bolt places they all tell me its a spark plug thread. I am planning to do it on the bike. I was thinking of buying a new sump but it might do it again??

Hey Busgo, thanks for that link. It was helpful. I thought i was the only one. lol
