Bogong High Plains Road - Ward P - 15-04-2009

For those not familiar with this road.
It was a dirt road from Falls creek to Anglers rest.
Now that it's complete, it will make a lovely little loop from Mt Beauty to Bright.(or vise versa) or even from Omeo to OmeoIdiot2

Anyway I thought I'd check it out.

Cathy and I took a drive along the new road yesterday afternoon, to try out the Victorian Alpine loop.
It was fairly fresh tar, with still a lot of loose stones on some of the corners(read lots of 4 wheel drifting going onCoolsmiley), but the sections nearer to Falls creek and Rocky Valley Dam were fine(they were finished over a month ago). Once the road has been swept and the fog lines put on, it will be fantastic – but not for the faint hearted.

It is really narrow in places, has simply hundreds of blind and tightening corners, lots of undergrowth right up next to the road in places, higher than 6ft in places - perfect for the odd critter to hide in and also to hide oncoming traffic.

Having said that it is a brilliant bit of road. Beautiful scenery in places, lovely and smooth, undulating, and drops down off the mountain in a great series of switch back corners. (Even the cars brakes smelt pretty bad by the time I Hit the Omeo Highway, and there were lots of complaints about “Why do the tyres make that squealing noise all the time!”)

It finishes just near Anglers Rest and the Blue Duck Inn.
I’d forgotten just how constantly windy the Omeo Highway was.
Not much fun in the car but magnificent on the bike.

(this is wher it hits the Omeo Highway)
Afternoon tea in Omeo, then up and over that gorgeous bit of road, the Alpine way, over Hotham, down to Bright, and back to Tallangatta. It was a 400km round trip.

That looks like another great alternative route Ward.
Are there still a lot of brumbies running around up there?

didn't see any Ray,

went to Sydney the other day via Khancoban and Thredbo,
saw "evidence" along the road of brumbies.
- That is one beautiful road, the views are great when takin' it slow with the family.

We also have a new mountain road just been sealed up in the Hunter Valley.
It runs from Sandy Hollow to Kandos out near Mudgee.
This will be a much shorter route to Sofala or Bathurst for us now.
It cuts about 100 ks off the old route via Merriwa.
