The Kanji on the K9 is a dead give away. If it stays one colour regadles of the angle your looking at it from, it'll be K8. If it changes from a gold through to red at different angles, it'll be the harlequin finish of the K9 Kanji.

Cheers. Kanji changes colour. Okay I'm convinced I have a K9. Thanks everyone.

The kanji on the 08 grey, the 08 blue and the 09 black are the same I reckon you just need to see them in the same light but I agree that the 09 bike is my choice for a black one.

I had to replace my RHS fairing on my K9, when I ordered the parts, I received parts for a K8, now from what I can tell ,the colours, Black and Grey were oposite to each other on the K8 to a K9...........and the black was a plain black, were as my K9 had blue flecks in it (can only see it in sunlight though)
so a K9 black model is the one with Black flecks in the paint work according to the guys at McCulloch Suzuki Perth (parts)
Hope this helps.
